What is a doctor pen? A music pen? Does it mean anything at all or it's just the name of the pen?

Hi,

A music pen is a pen intended for writing music. It normally has three tines.

Music Pens are designed to have a very thin stroke and on the same nib a very broad stroke this is done to create the correct line thickness in music scores, I am a composer and it is quite a handy tool.

Doctor Pens I believe are pens that are able to be used in any writing position.

I own a Sailor Magellan with a music nib and I really love it!! I am going to buy another Music pen but one that is made by Pilot/Namiki!! I believe it is a Pilot Model 74 with a 14kt single tone 3 tine nib. It looks very similar to the Platinum Meistro. Unfortunately, they do not sell them in the states so I am gonna have to go to my ebay connection and pick one up. $120.00 is the going price, which is extremely cheap!! I am gonna buy 2, one for me and one for the wife!!!

I think that "Doctor's Pens" are usually white - they were made for the medical community, to go along with the white scrubs of days gone by.

So if you have a lot of ink,

You should get a Yink, I think.

A music pen is a pen intended for writing music. It normally has three tines.

But it doesn't have to. :) I grind music nibs for Pelikans, and they work very well with only two tines.

A music nib is a modified stub, intended to be used for writing music while at the piano. To do this, the composer/arranger usually holds the pen rotated so that the narrow strokes will be vertical (for making note stems and measure bars) and the broad strokes will be horizintal (for making note bodies and flags). The nib is adjusted for a very wet flow and is much "softer" than an ordinary stub, so that it can be used freely, almost scribbling, at an angle of elevation that would "stub the toes" of most ordinary stubs.

Here are idealized views of an ordinary stub (left) and a music nib (right):

What is a doctor pen?

The vintatage ones are usually white in color, not sure if the nibs are any different.

I have seen some that look like a pen but actually is a carrier for thermometer.

The newest modern Dcotor's pen will an LE offered by winedoc (Kevin).

It is a Conway Sterwart 100 in black (instead of usual assumed white color) with sterling trim. I think it has been recently reviewed here. Very nice.

When in doubt, always check your reference sources. I should know that by now.

A doctor's pen, historically, is a pen with either a built in or paired thermometer. See the following link with some cool pics from David Nishimura's website:

  • 2 weeks later...

Here is an E-bay auction for a Sheaffer Doctor set - FP, MP and thermometer case. Not sure how it came up in my search for "Hard Rubber", but thought it would be of interest.

Now that is neat!

I've seen Waterman nurse's sets but never a Sheaffer doctor set before. Thanks, JA! :) (and no, I won't be bidding on it!)
