That was a great Stypen. Writes like a dream and was offered with a matching ball point. I remember they came in black, burgundy and green. They

thought they would sell them to Harley Davidson Stores, but they were never interested. The pen had the right beefy look and the sweet lines of an

engine block. I thought it hit the mark with the packaging as well.

Hi All,

I just joined FPN and am looking forward to learning more about fountain pens, and owning my first.

I expressed my interest in my new-found obsession on Facebook last night and an old friend is gifting me with a couple of vintage pens! One is a vintage Harley Davidson pen like the green one that started this thread...

The other is an old Mont Blanc about which he only said it was a "starter" MB that he's had for decades.

My question is about the obvious need for TLC that both of these pens will have.

How do I find out which nibs to buy to replace nibs on vintage pens? I've been researching how to clean them up, but I figure I'll need new nibs before I'll be able to truly write with them...

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi

Welcome to FPN and the Waterman forum.

If you are getting the same pen as in the first post of this topic, then that is NOT a Waterman pen but a Stypen.

It will take a standard international cartridge and converter. But Waterman cartridges are almost identical in the mouthpiece, so they will probably also fit.

I don't know what kind of Montblanc you are getting. Probably a piston-filler, so that will be a bit different in use than teh Stypen Harley..

Al pens need cleaning on a regular basis. That means flushing the pen with plain cold water. The best way to do that with a cartridge pen is with a converter or with a rubber bulb (like the ones used to clean out ears, you can buy them for a few dollar at a pharmacy. Cut of some of the snout so it fits more or less into rhe place where the cartridge goes. That will allow you to squeeze much more water than with the converter, but the converter works fine, just needs more cycles.

Flush till the water that comes out is clean. Then put the section (that is the front part that has the nib) in a few cms of water in an old glass for 10 minutes and flush again. Usually some more ink comes out.

Flush well every time you change inktype or colour.

Also flush every month or so, if you keep using the same ink, but in that case you can be a bit less thorough.

ONLY when the pen is extremely dirty use other than plain water. In that case you can use a drop of dishwashing soap or a dash of ammonia in the water in most modern pens. Use this with a converter, suck some of the solution up and let it sit for a while. flush again and repeat as needed. ONLY when really dirty!.

A rubber bulb is no use when cleaning a pistonfiller. Just suck up clean water and expel again until the water stays clean. Then suck the pen full of water again and let it sit for 10 minutes. Flush again until clear.

After cleaning put your pen nib down in a glass or cup with some kitchen paper or toilet paper in the bottom, so the excess water may be removed from the pen and let stand for a few hours. Or just fill the pen with ink, but the ink will be diluted just a tiny bit. No problem usually, but if you want to avoid that let the pen dry first.

For the rest, wipe the pen with a damp cloth every now and then, and wipe the nib after filling.

Good luck

Wow. Thank you for that detailed reply! I'm looking forward to doing all of that when I get these pens! I'll post some pics also.

I'm guessing I'll need new nibs as my friend wrote with these for years and I doubt we right similarly enough that the nibs will do well under my hand.

Thanks again!

If cared for well, nibs could perform well for many decades, there are even ancient pens with nibs well over 100 yrs old that still perform well.

First you have to get these pens, and then you can see the state they are in. If your friend was a lover of pens he might have cared well for them.

And that Stypen isn't that old.

Good luck, and indeed show us some pics when you get them. Be sure to include good clear close-ups of the nibs!.

Thanks. I definitely will. That's good news on the nibs.

He's putting them in the mail Monday in Thailand. We'll see how long they take to get here!

So, I am prepping to buy some ink cartridges for my HD pen, and the original owner sent me this message on Facebook. I'm hoping someone here can tell me definitively, which converter I should buy for this pen, as I don't want to use cartridges. I'd rather use bottled ink, so...
1. "The HD pen should work with watermen cartridges.
2. "For the HD pen I used cartridges from the German company PELIKAN. Using those, I could have had a spare one in the back of the pen, and by screwing the pen together, the ball at the opening end of the cartridge was automatically pressed inside. I am not sure, if that works with the waterman cartridges. as I remember, they are a little longer. So you might have to press the Waterman cartridge down manually."

Thanks!

All current Waterman converters will fit. If you look at the pinned topic about cartridges and converters on top of the page, all converters from 11 onwards.

The waterman cartridges are double the size of the ones you used from Pelikan. A converter is about the same size as 1 of the Pelikan carts you used.

If you have a spare normal standard international converter you could try that as well, as the Waterman nipple is almost identical to the SI nipple.

And by the way, Pelikan also has a large size cartridge, similar to the Waterman one.

Pardon the rookie questions...

I tried a cartridge in the pen recently and the nipple's diameter was just a shade to wide to fit comfortably in the pen... Thus my worry. I'm not sure what size the cartridge was, as it was a PIF from someone on another board...

But if any Waterman converter will fit, I'll go ahead and order one up and start writing!

Here's the one I'm looking at...

Yes, that it the correct converter but you may not get the style shown in the picture. It is not the current style so you may get the plastic mouth version.

Many, many brands use the SI (Standard International) size, usually the short form, although Pelikan also makes a long version.

And then there are some brands that make their own size, Like Parker, Sheaffer, Cross, Lamy and the Japanese companies.

Waterman is a bit in between, as they are almost identical to the SI, with a slightly other shape of the nipple, and with a slightly narrower body. Waterman uses a long (double size) cartridge that is just a bit narrower than the SI-shorts, so an SI short MAY (or may not) get stuck in SOME Waterman pens. (no doubt to make life more interesting for the pen aficionados :) )

Monblanc is another in between. The have SI cartridges but their won style converter which does not fit in most other SI-brands. (pity, as it is a good converter)

And to make life more interesting again, some brands have a different size just for one or two models....

Several websites have lists of brands and cartridges.

That's great....

Not a Waterman, officially, but never mind that, the important part is that it is working well.

And looking good!

Enjoy

Yes... I only just realised this is a Waterman thread, not an HD thread... but I posted the pic because I'd received so much good advice and wanted folks to know they helped me get my pen up and running!

Thanks again.

Regina Martini still sell them as Waterman, despite an email stating the facts. This is voluntary misrepresentation, very disapointing coming from such a reputable seller.

So funny...I just received one of these HD pens as a gift. It had belonged to a relative who died many years ago and was apparently his favorite, though it shows no signs of wear. A quick google search led me here to this very old thread. It has a very sad dried-out cartridge, so I suppose I'm off to find a converter now.

Or use a cartridge. AFAIK even the short international carts will fit.

Yes, I cleaned out the dried one and it's very similar to the international ones. I'm going to try an international converter, too.

The problem with the Waterman sizes is not so much the mouth but the tail of the cartridge (and converter).

On SOME types of pen, Waterman uses an internal ring that can just accept the slightly narrower tail of the Waterman cartridges, but not the minimally wider tail on short (and long) Standard International carts.

If that is the case, one often can use 1 short SI cart with a tight fit. But never force another short SI down the barrel of a Waterman to ride piggyback as a spare. Chances are you will never get it out again, or only with a tremendous effort (and mess)

Other Waterman barrels are much wider. I don't remember if someone ever compiled a list of the narrow versus wider types.

Vice versa, the long Waterman cartridges will work OK in regular sized SI-pens. (But pens like the Kaweco Sport will obviously not be able to use them. Even some Waterman pens don't accept the long Waterman cartridge, notably the cute Ici-et-La.
