A celluloid Pen - Work in Progress

penboard.de

Recommended Posts

Good morning to all,

here is a new pen I am working on,

and now find myself in the middle of the final works.

Sure, design shows, where I took the inspiration.

Nib will be a neutralized MB 149 nib, Feed an ebonite feed 149 from the 50ies.

A star of course I can´t fit - it will be a casein round dot, inserted into the ebonite cap top.

And rings ? I´ll fit one central ring, which is right now being cast from a wax model.

The challenge for me is to do the pen with original materials, celluloid, ebonite, Casein,

and follow the vintage techniques e.g. for fitting the rings.

Best regards

and thanks for your comments.

Thanks as well for the enthusiastic response on the gold Laguardia pen.

Hi, Tom. That looks gorgeous; thank you for sharing. One question, as I can't tell with the pen capped: do you plan on putting in an ink-view window? Best,

David

Hi David, no inkwindow... This will become a buttonfilled pen from grey PL celluloid. I´ll post the pictures of the final pen in some days.

Tom

Tom, this is just superb vintage replica! Reminding me of Montblanc! Will you sell any finished product?

Waiting eagerly for the final product photos!

Best of luck!

Abhik.

Oooh... I love conical ends on pens, and this emulates one of the most handsome periods in MB styling, IMO... can I have a little one in the 132 size? ;)

Tom, this is a gorgeous pen. I love the way you will be using vintage MB parts in the completion of it. Really looking forward to seeing it complete

This pen looks great Tom and so does its source of inspiration. Here are the points I would look into if I were to design the pen: the cap looks a bit too long for the clip, but maybe that will change with the trim ring near the lip; the step between cap and barrel looks a bit high and maybe a counter step in the barrell would help; the contrast between the black ebonite ends and the green arco celluloid isn't the greatest, why not try some coral orange or lapis lazuli blue celluloids or some woodgrain ebonite for the body?

Can't wait to see the pen uncapped.

Dear Rob,

thank you - well, your points are right, cap will appear better with a ring fit, the cap lip will the thinned, no counter step in the barrel, I don´t like them.

Contrast - it also depends on material available, but there is some Blu Lapislazuli celluloid and orange black swirl ebonite and some OMAS green Arco celluloid already cut and waiting to be finished. The Dark grey PL - its charme definitely is, that its partly black=no contrast, and partly silver, a perfect decent match to black.

Next pix tonight.

Best regards

Tom

That looks wonderful! I look forward to seeing the completed pen very much. Will you be in Cologne this year?

Btw, I am still very happy with the MB #22 and #24 you sold me a couple of years ago :)

OK, here is the almost finished pen,

Did not want to wait for the ring to be cast in Gold, so I just pushed over the ring,

you see, its now a bit too fat. To fit the gold ring, I´ll cut a groove, and then shrink fit the ring,

so the lower parts of the ring are on the same level than the celluloid.

The white dot is from vintage white Casein.

Nib is an anonymized MB 149 nib, so it does not harm any brand rights.

And the feed is a 1950ies hard rubber 149 feed.

Thanks for your most positive and helpful reactions.

I grew into the pen making from the vintage pen angle and I must confess,

if restoring a pen is already a satisfaction, its a lot more satisfying, to do one from scratch.

Best regards

Tom

Wow! Very nice work, Tom. You do realize that it is now a MORAL IMPERATIVE that you produce these in sufficient numbers (and at a reasonable enough price ;)) to satisfy all the pen lust you have now created?
