My late Grandfather started it without even knowing it at the time.

I'll save the long story.........before he had the chance to sell it at a garage sale for $.25, roughly 20 years ago, I took claim to a circa 1940's Sheaffer Imperial Desk Set......yes he made me pay.

I still keep it inked and use it daily.

RIP Grandpa.

A Parker flighter 180 about 33 years ago. I didn't know what it was called back then and only recently discovered the model name. I just knew that it could write thick/thin lines and it looked good. Used it throughout my school life and I still have it :)

mine was a stypen - plain colour first (they were very fashionable and the MUST HAVE at school)... I went over to another style - dont remember what and hated it so went through lots of stypens - they seemd to have a particular nib that suited my handwriting always made it look neater

as for the later years..... I found a stypen a few years back in a school staionary shop so bought it and it was still a great nib (if anyone knows a good nib that resembles this type would appreciate the details) and I also like the Pilot V4 which is what reawakened the passion this time around.

So I'm opinionated - get over it!!.......No, really - get over it!!

Hmmmm I was going to put up a WANTS list - but that's too long as well ......

It was about 12 years ago while trying to find an old pocket watch for my grandfather's birthday in an antique

shop that i finally went out with a pen i really liked .

Later on after browsing the internet i found it to be a Conway Stewart 74 in blue marble.

I actually gave the pen to my grandfather but really wanted one of my own and found in the same

shop a CS 84 in the same color with a sweet flexible nib . That was it, now i am hooked and in the pot.

I was given a Lamy during high school by my parents one birthday - it was a Gunmetal CP1 that I never used until my final exams.

I ruined the nib on that one but was able to buy a replacement gold nib for this pen. After high school I started really getting into fountain pens and by that time, the Gunmetal CP1 had been discontinued. I scoured high and low and finally got my dirty little paws on another Gunmetal CP1 and then finding out about different types of Lamy CP1...then the 2000...then other brands (shock horror!)...

And here I am today, with far too many pens and not enough time to use them.

In rotation:

Pelikan M400 with Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji

Nakaya Kuro-tame Desk Pen with Platinum Blue

Visconti Van Gogh Maxi with Aurora Black

Hey everyone,

I'd be interested in knowning what pen started it all for you and if you still have it?

My first fountain pen was purchased about 7 years ago. Walking around Staples I believe, or Office Max, anyway they had one Diplomat Classic Collection fountain pen with a Medium nib. I had always wanted a fountain pen and they were looking to get rid of it, so if memory is correct, they gave it to me for 35 dollars.

I still have it and still write with it. It's been a very good pen. It's now a little beat up from a lot of years use and I'm very glad to see that these pens are now back on the market.

So there is mine, what was the one that started it all for you? Just the one, not what we've all come to purchase since than.

Be well,

Mike

It might be a cheap Wearever or Esterbrook in my childhood, Us$2, long time ago.

What a memory!!,

Julio

My first half a dozen fountain pens were Parker Vectors and one Reflex... none of which I can find now!

Story of our lives... I really wish I had more time to write with my pens, but demands of modern life ensure otherwise.

For me it was a Black Waterman Expert II. That pen has been a staple to me. I used to to sign my marriage license, the birth certificates of both children, bought 2 cars, and will soon sign for a new home.

It has become an heirloom to me in this way I guess...

it all started when my wife got me a Montblanc RB as an anniversary present about 14 years ago. a little after that i went and bought myself a cross solo from office max, back in the days when they had them. i didn't use the FP right away, somehow i was hooked on RB's. nevertheless, i kept buying inexpensive FP's: Phileas (after the Solo), Parker inflection and so forth; until i decided to get a P"51" a few years ago. then it was all FP's and nothing else!!!!...

... end of story!

It started with a jotter bp that didnt wasnt working properly, so I returned it and went online researching a better pen. Found this site and bought a lamy studio soon after. That was only in February, still have that pen and many more.

It started when, while looking for a new bp in the drawer of my father, I found a no name FP.

My father is a doctor and he got tons of cheapo BP with the pharma brand or product name on it. You can see one of his drawers here.

That day I found the silver FP you can see in the same post linked above. After that, I get interested in this field, and this was my personal "escalation"

- buying an old Diplomat on a flea market

- registering on FPN

- buyng FP on supermarket (Parkers, Pelikans)

- purchasing pens as souvenirs of my travels

- registering on ebay...

You can imagine how that went on and on... :)

Cheers,
