How often do you see people using fountain pens?

I can't even remember the last time I saw one being used, with one exception.

My friends wife likes them and generally uses a Cross, but she only seems to use it for writing out Xmas / birthday cards?

I've never seen anyone use a fountain pen that didn't come out of my pocket. I am however convincing one of the guys I work with to start. He is looking to just get an inexpensive cross one, but hey, at least it's another person using real ink.

I have not seen anybody else use a fountain pen yet (in or out of the office). I work in an office environment and there are over 100+ staff.

I can't say i have ever actually seen anyone else using one in my life.

Although, a few students i have met that came from China claim they own fountain pens, i have never seen them with one.

Other than that one of my teachers in highschool said that her son used them.

In the office we have also a limited ink exchange program. Whenever somebody buys a new ink, samples are available for exchange also sometimes merchants give ink for free when you make a large purchase. These extra inkwells are often slow moving exotic colors and are exchanged internally to people who like it.

I saw my insurance agent a couple weeks ago, he was using a fountain pen one of those Bic fountain pens. Well I told him it's a start.

In the late Seventies all my friends carried Mont Blancs - it was an animator thing and, characteristically, I ended up buying several Vacumatics instead.

Since then, the only people I see using fountain pens are in period mysteries on PBS. They mostly use them to write confessions. There's something lacking in a confession written with a ballpoint.

No one but me...FPs are as scarce as hens teeth here in the wilderness of s. Indiana. When I attempt an explanation to those who ask me (to paraphrase the general consensus) "why the hassle and expense?" I get blank stares as of I've told them thier dog is not coming home.

I'm good with it...makes for a much better market for the vintage "stuff".

When I do see people with fountain pens, it is my family members, outside of them I never see fountain pens being used. If I new more folks in my day to day life that used fountain pens and enjoyed discussing them I probably wouldn't come on this forum as much as I do!

Well, I never seen anybody else FP's in my High School (Like some people, I'm also a student)... usually when they ask what the pen is, I tell them its a FP, and then the usual question "How much is it" then I tell them.. and then the usual reaction "overpriced pen"..

In a training session this week I was sat next to a gentleman who had a capped steel pen of some sort sat on the desk in front of him, with excitement I watched out of the corner of my eye until he eventaully reached for the pen and began to write. With dissapointment he uncapped the pen to reveal a ballpoint tip. I'm sure it was still a nice pen but it would have been nice to finally see someone else using a FP.

I had to take my mother for a routine appointment at the local hospital yesterday.

The Consultant we saw was using a fountain pen with a very broad gold/gp nib.

I didn't recognise the pen, but I would guess that it was a vintage one (not that I am any kind of an expert pen-spotter).

Sadly, there wasn't really time to ask him about it, or about the ink that he was using in it.

In more-important news, he was happy that the hospital has my mother's condition under control

ETA: So, in the last few years, I have only seen one District Judge and one Hospital Consultant using FP's. I also know of one person who is in charge of the Admin at a Professional Institution here who uses one (for her signature).

Their pens & inks:

District Judge: Parker Sonnet in Black with gold trim. Ink: Parker Quink black.
Hospital Consultant: unknown black (vintage?) pen with gold/gp nib & trim. Unkown black ink.
Professional Institution: a Lamy Safari inked with Lamy Violet.
