How often do you see people using fountain pens?

Only my father, and the random person at work who needs to borrow a pen and is adventurous enough to try it ;)

People usually seem to think I'm crazy. The responses fall into two categories: expense and loss. Pens are free (and absolutely terrible) at work. Others like to buy their favorite bic dozen because they lose pens too often. Sometimes people complain about the mess.

I accept all of the above because I spent 5 years trying to find the right pen (Parker Gel worked for me until I found LAMY Safari). Notebooks I let work buy for me (though I also buy plenty of my own for personal use).

I have two colleagues on campus who regularly use a fountain pen....out of about 800!!! I actually met a person in the public library this morning who was making notes with a Visconti. We had a nice chat....

Teaching at a university, I thought I'd see a lot of FP users, but alas... I think I'm the only one.

+1. I'm at a public school, one of the largest in the state, and figured I'd run across a few other FP users. Nope. Nary a one.

I thought I had made a convert out of a department colleague who had grown up using FP, but no go.

I suppose it's just as well. There are no B&M pen shops around here worth frequenting anyway. That just leaves more toys for those of us who do use them.

read, write, grade essays, repeat

I've gone to school with students that used FP's. I've also seen used cartridges lying about and essays that were clearly written with FP's. People notice me, though, and I enjoy the popularity :)

I always have a bottle of ink and a pen in my bag

I'm a little hot potato right meow

I opened a box of cheerios and planted them. I thought they were doughnut seeds. They didn't sprout :( (joke of the week)

One co-worker has started using FP's since she saw mine. And I've noticed for quite some time that a state insurance consultant marks his approvals/disapprovals with what is clearly

Quink Blue ink. The only others I've seen were at a pen show or in old black-and- white movies....

Just want to take a minute and thank everyone for posting your comments and stories. I started this topic long ago, get copied and have read every response. Fantastic! Keep 'em coming!

I visit, on average, six local engineering companies a week. In nine years, I've seen exactly two engineers using fountain pens. Both of them used Vanishing Points. I have 1300 engineers in my contacts list, so you can see that the percentage, at least of engineers, is very tiny.

Never. In our Staples there is solitary, neglected bottle of Parker black ink. Not much demand here.

No one, but in high-school, you wouldn't expect to see one though, and I don't really look for people using them.

Other than my wife and her sister, no one ever. Sad but true. People at work and elsewhere are interested in my pens, but always semm to back down mumbling something like "too inconvenient" or "too expensive", both of which aren't really true.

I'll win over a convert someday! And until then I will greatly enjoy the pleasure of writing.

Other then the purple varsities I always give away to friends who ask "what kind of pen is that". Just my father and me.

I took out my Safari today and my friend says, "Nice, you're using your fancy pen..."

I wasn't sure how to tell him it was just a "user" pen...

Never besides me.

I put about 100 pens in the hands of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders last year at school, so hopefully that will change. They were just cheap 100 yen pens from my good buddy Samovar, but the kids loved them.

One of the coaches at school has one. I'll ask him to bring it one day. He said he has a bit of a pen fetish, but mostly uses G2s and the like.
