Hi everyone!

I was wondering if anyone had any measurements comparing the size of the 149 to the 146, like girth, capped length, posted length, etc.

Thanks!

Sure, but remember that the sizes varied depending on the year they were made.

149: L capped=5 7/8" L posted=6 5/8" W= 5/8"

146: L capped=5 3/4" L posted=6 3/16" W=9/16"

I've had both models for a long time, and I still debate which I like more.

For extended periods the 146 is a better fit for my hand size, but

the 149 was my first Meisterstuck, and I'd have to say it is still my favorite for

sentimental reasons, larger nib, and its overall impressive presence.

If I had to choose between the two in the setting of intensive notetaking and writing,

I'd go 146. For shorter notes, leisurely letters, signatures, the 149

(for my hand size).

The key difference between the two pens, in my opinion, is not the size, but the nib. The 149 has a much nicer nib than the 146.... both from the standpoint of visual appearance and performance on paper.

I find no difference in the performance of my modern 149 and 146 nibs.

They all have the characteristic MB feel that I enjoy - not slippery smooth,

and not too much feedback - just a tad to provide some feel of the fibers.

edit to add: my vintage 146 is flexier.

Thanks for the replies. I must agree that the 149's nib is much more visually striking. Good to know that it performs on par or better when compared to the 146.

Just how much is a 146 or a 149 worth nowadays? I just received a gift of a 146 with very badly reground nib (and feed) and a cracked resin section where the threads are. Is it worth the cost of repair to fix this up (new nib, new nib feed, new threaded section)?

There is no difference between the two nibs. Only in terms of appearance, but in no other sense.

Unfortunately MB only makes the 149 is black resin and hugely expensive solid gold and platinum. A sterling 149 would have been nice.

Wow, that really is disappointing to have to choose between resin and gold. One's not durable enough, and the other is too ostentatious and expensive. I was always hoping that they made different variations of the 149.

The first thing is what year is the 146? An older one will command a higher price than a newer one. Montblanc will repair everything but the nib for around $55, so I have been told. A good nibmeister can repair the nib for less than $100 I would suspect, may I suggest Greg Minuskin. So you are looking at $160 or so, which I would say any 146 is well worth.

Allan,

Thanks for the feedback. I think that the pen is > 10 years old, as the gentleman that gave it to me had stopped collecting some time ago; his youthful indulgence now satisfied, he has a large collection that he is working through, rather than adding to.

I'm encouraged that the non-nib repair will be inexpensive - but the nib will have to be replaced completely (unfortunately). I'll look Greg up, and put in a call to Richard Binder, too.

At least this way, I get the nib that I want, and not the one that came with the pen! (XF, here I come!)

I have no idea how bad your nib is, but Richard Binder retipped and reground a nib for me and the work was flawless. Don't underestimate what might be possible.

Oh, trust me - this is bad. I can't get a good picture right now, but I borrowed one from the internet (here's the original link: Mont-Blanc 146 hyperlink ), and edited it to show the shape of my nib - lots of material is missing (outlined by the RED line in my new image).

This will have to be a labor of love - full replacement, if anything.

I remember reading something about the 149, that those made after 1952 were much stronger than the injection molded Montblancs. But were all Montblancs made with this new process since then? Just curious if there is a difference in the build quality of the 146 and 149.

Hello? This is simply wrong. I challenge anyone to go to a pen store and hold a 146 and a 149 side by side and compare the nibs. The nib on the 149 is much larger.

Hello,

Is it really that you nib MIA, or yours may be a monotone gold nib?

My two cents..
