Sheaffer Legacy II fountain pens

All -I am the proud new owner of a Sheaffer Legacy II fountain pen. The Pen is a spectacular writer.

 

Here's my question? Does anyone have any feedback regarding the touchdown filling mechnaism? Pros or Cons?

 

Also wondering if Classic aerometric style converter, will work if one is not using the touchdown filling mechnaism.

I use both carts and TD in my Leg II. I am a big fan of the TD system in general, although the removable "convertor" on the Leg, means it doesn't seal quite as well as vintage TD's.

 

I hate aerometrics so I'd stick with the TD or carts.

Hello Brandon,

 

I've got a Legacy II with the touchdown and I don't have any problems with it the filling mechanism. I've got a review of it up in the Fountain Pen Review forum.

 

The difference between the modern and the vintage filling mechanism is that with the new pens it takes two strokes to fill the the pen so:

 

- Immerse nib

- pull out plunger

- depress smartly

- wait a few seconds

- repeat

- remove, wipe and enjoy.

 

I'm not sure whether the convertor will fit, maybe Jim (the PenHero) will advise.

Regarding the filling,

 

I actually believe (and have read) that it is better to do a dry downstroke, then extend the tube out again, quickly immerse the nib and do your second downstroke...and wait 10 seconds then wipe. It seems that this would collapse the sac inside the converter better than doing two fill strokes. I have a Legacy I and this method allows for far more ink than the alternative. You might want to try this way for yourself and see.
