Im thinking about ordering some Franklin Covey wire bound planners. Does any one have any experience with these planners? How is the paper quality? Are they Fountain Pen friendly?

Thanks!!!

Here is the particular product Im considering:

Hi. This may not help you much, but I just dug out my FC planner (looseleaf, not wirebound) from a few years ago and scribbled on it a bit. No feathering, no bleed through, a little toothy, but acceptable. I have always experienced good paper from them. I love planners, but hate planning, so I have alot of FC paper left over from years past...

Hrm. My experience is opposite yours. I also dug out my old FC loose-leaf binder and gave it a quick try. No feathering or toothiness, but quite a bit of bleed-through, even with some of my finer/drier nibs. In fact, the bleed-through was bad enough that it drove me to DIYplanner.com for a solution back in May. I needed my to-do lists visible, and with any amount of scribbling on the previous day's notes section, the To-Do section would come pre-ruined. :headsmack:

I think like so many other products mentioned here, the paper quality is out of our control (consider all the pro- and anti-Moleskine posts!) and "past results is not an indicator of future performance" as they say in investing.

You might want to give FC a call and see if they have any old wire-bound planners that they can send you on a deep discount (2007, for example should be cheap!) or even paper samples. It can't hurt to ask the source.

FoP great idea. Duh. Shoulda thunk it. Thanks

OboeJuan: Thanks. I should have mentioned that I had used FC years ago and checked out some old loose pages. Im not sure if quality changed. Seems to happen with paper from one year to the next (i.e., Moleskin,etc.).

Thanks again!

For some reason, I think I remember reading somewhere that Strathmore makes Franklin Covey's paper.

I've got the wirebound planner...I'll go a quick scribble or three and see what turns up.

AJ, you're a fine/medium guy, right?

Scribbled with three different pens and inks.

1. 51 Aero w/medium Newhaven & Florida Blue: No feathering, no bleed

2. Conklin Ohio w/fat fine & Conklin-branded blue ink: No feathering, no bleed

3. Levenger True Writer w/cursive italic fine & Noodler's Bulletproof Black: No feathering, but a hint of bleed (hard to see it, but it was there if you looked closely)

So, there's at least a little anecdotal evidence that it's okay. YMMV.

I do what I can, AJ.

You want the month of December to doodle on? Sadly enough, I pony'd up for the planner and the nice black leather cover for $90+ and haven't really used it as I should have. At any rate, you're welcome to December's in order to test. I might ask a small favor in return, but I'll message you about it.

  • 4 months later...

I use the loose leaf planner. Over the years the paper characterists have changed. One issue is the dated planner paper is different than the blank refills. the extra pages are terrible. The normal pages are pretty good providing you don't use too wet a pen. But since the line width is pretty small, you don't want too wide or wet a line. Then it works pretty good.

I am gong to write a note to FC to keep and the FP problem with refills. JD
