Hand anatomy and prefered pen size.

So how big is yours, "Too Loose"?

Well...um...don't you know about shrinkage? Hands in water are susceptible to shrinkage! Any number I give you would be totally misleading!

;)

(whoops! Picture of George in "Seinfeld" may not be appropriate for all "age" levels....Sorry folks! Just my twisted sense of humour  )

...and sorry to keep steering this off-topic.....I'll steer it back now.........

Denis,

Have you come to any conclusions so far re: hand size and preferred pen size...or are 9 sets of data (so far) too few to work with?

Hi,

So far I am the miniature. (Yes, I really am a miniature) Well, what I said has been confirmed a few times and all I can say is that I am still looking for the perfect pen.

Dillon, have you tried an Esterbrook SJ or a Wahl Bantam yet? The SJ is pretty small (almost too small for me, even posted) and I understand the Bantam (1930s bulb filler) is smaller yet.

Hi,

I am looking for an SJ. Tell me if you see a relatively good deal somewhere.

Hi Dillo,

I think many people here (including myself) are looking for the perfect pen... :)

As for hand size, well I am pretty sure you are the youngest person here on FPN (you just turned 14, right?), so that would explain that.

Good luck finding your "Holy Grail" of pens! :D

Actually, you're reading me right on. That episode is exactly what I was hinting at.

My left index finger is 90 mm long and 20.5 mm wide at the indicated point (have to be very specific given the shift this post is taking :P ).  I prefer larger pens - M805, Van Gogh Maxi, Bexley Sheherazade & Submariner Grande are great as far as size (and other ways also).

AN M805 large  Look toward an M1000, Churchill or Dolcevita OS for a large pen ;)

As for my hand measurements:

4.6" length and 0.5" diameter

Kurt,

Perhaps you could remeasure according to the post Denis made HERE 'cause I am afraid 6" x 1/2" is gonna attract comments. ;)

Seriously, if that is the measure of your index finger - you gotta have trouble finding gloves to fit... :)

Kurt, the measurement is from the tip of the index finger to the biggest knuckle of that finger:

I'm not saying it's not possible, but...

Oh and "Too-Loose", I sort of figured you had that show in mind. It was a funny "Seinfeld" episode

Oh wow, two simulaneous posts with the same question for Kurt!

I was just calculating if that measurement is correct, it would mean a total hand length of over one foot. Not saying it's not possible....

Well, noting that he would have an index finger a full 2" longer than mine certainly got my attention. My hands aren't extraordinarly large, but 2" more.... WOW.

Yes, interesting the times being the same. Mine must have been marginally earlier to get posted first - so I claim proprietary rights for noticing first though...

You got it, Gerry!

I remember when Jim's pen quiz was on and Chris Burton and I kept posting the same correct answer at the same time, but I think Chris beat me by mere seconds almost every time  That was fun....

I see that you like modern pens. Have you tried the Pelikan 300 size? I have small hands and I love it. If you consider vintage the world of small pens really opens up.

Waterman 52 1/2 V ringtops or plain, comes in all sorts of nice materials.

Sheaffer Jr. Balance - My favorite at the moment (and I mean moment! It can change before I hit "add reply"

Mabie Todd has a bunch of small pens

If you want to go really small, there's the Peter Pan pens. Sweet!

Hi,

Ok, I found a pencil that fits, and it is the Staedtler Lumograph woodcased drawing pencil.

Yes but a pencil's length changes over time. Does it fit when sharpened first or after severl sharpenings

Dillon,

Our Brian Anderson has an Estie SJ going for $16 over on the PT Greenboard right now.

Tomorrow I'll post you some pics of some thin 1970s Sailor pens that I have. If you like them, you can have them.

My own measurements are:

- Length: 3.7 inches (9.5cm)

- Width: 0.7 inches (1.8cm)

Preferred pen width is still being determined, but so far the Sailor 1911 and a Lucky Curve Duofold Sr are the 2 biggest pens I am comfortable writing with. Based on my limited experience so far, I think the weight of the pen has more of an effect on me than the width.

Question on pen width - Is it the point where your fingers grip the pen, where the pen rests on the web between your thumb and forefinger, or the widest point of a pen that you are most comfortable with, that you're after, Denis?

raf.

EDIT - Whooooops! Brian has also listed his pens here in our own marketplace too!

You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometimes... you just might find... you'll get what you need...
