Bexley Submariner Grande

I have swapped the metal section out for a black resin one. When I get a chance and figure out the new digital camera, I'll post an updated pic and make a few comments on the change. FWIW, it cost a total of $6 which was simply to pay for insured shipping back to me. :D :D :D

Please excuse the quality of the pics as I'm still trying to figure out a new camera. I hope these are better, but will certainly give you a shot of the pen with the new black resin section.

The switch to the resin section has made the pen super-light when unposted. Posted, it's still light, but the center of gravity has moved up a bit. It still balances well. The feel of the resin is much better than the metal. Definitely an improvement!

Thanks, Michael!

Very lovely, with the resin section. I prefer pens with non-metal sections myself, as you may have gathered .

very nice pen and review, southpaw! it's great that you could get the resin section at minimal cost. now that's service.

ok, your post has pushed me over the edge, and i just now purchased the parkville le submariner grande based solely on your review! the onus is all on you. :D

mine will have a fine nib tho, so i'll probably upgrade to the stub, also based on your recommendation. feeling sick yet?

No problem. If you're not happy, just send the pen to me.

Awright youse guys, I been sitting here reading all the good things you're saying about the Submariner Grande, and I gotta say, it brings tears to my old eyes. Happy tears, that is. Howard showed me the first set of prototypes earlier this year, and I agreed with him that he had a winner on his hands. Not that I dislike the standard-size Submariner -- in fact, it's actually more the size I normally prefer -- but the Grande does something to me that most other pens its size don't. In fact, it does enough that I asked Howard if he had any leftover resin from the dark Blue Pearl Cable Twist of about a decade ago -- remember the Cable Twist? He said he did, and I got down on bended knee and begged him to slip one pen's worth of that stuff in the next run, whenever the next run was going to be. It wasn't awfully long after that that an unexpected package from Columbus, Ohio, arrived on my doorstep. I opened it up, and I found this:

Been loving it ever since, but things change. At the Ohio show, I pulled it out so David Broadwell could take a gander at it. He immediately got that evil gleam in his eye and said, "Y'know, this would look really good with Damascus trim." David has a way with these things, and he is now in possession of a cap sans band and clip, for which he will fashion the appropriate parts in Damascus steel. The problem, of course, is that there would be a spare cap if David and Howard and I had not colluded further. Howard made TEN more Blue Pearl Grandes, which I will soon have available as an SE to accompany my Red Pearl standard-size Submariner SE. One of those ten caps is the one that went to David, and the one I have will go onto one of the new pens. Clever, huh? Resin sections being in short supply, the blue SE will come with a metal section, but swaps will be available.

With the two Damascus trim pieces costing more than the MSRP of the pen, I rather think not. Nice try, though. :)

The Blue Pearl is gorgeous, Richard, but I'd have to have the resin section on it. Dennis B had a black w/ GT and the black resin section made for me. Handsome son-of-a-gun!

Those plated metal sections just grate on my eyes. :(

So, when will the Blue Pearls be available?

I'm hoping there is a bit of a wait on the Blue Pearls. I need some time to gather funds (read give numerous college tours in the snow ;) ). I've been waiting patiently for my first Bexley, and this looks to be a perfect opportunity to dive in. Now, I just need good timing.

I believe the pens have been made and are on their way to me. If not, it'll certainly be within a week. If you seriously want one, b/c me about holding one for you.

They do not seem to like the doe snot. I don`t think that`s a rabbit delicacy.l

Mo and Ella only like carrot greens. And, they cannot be bribed. Ella will thump and grunt at you. Mo will hop quickly to his command post and call for reinforcements.
