Survey: Do you dot your j's?

Recommended Posts

Of late, in my effort to improve my handwriting I've been paying more attention to place the dot in the right place over my i's. I just realized that j's are supposed to be dotted too. I don't think I've ever dotted my j's. Do you?

Just wondering,

Doug

I always dot my 'i's and 'j's and cross my 't's - just not always in the right place... especially when writing quickly. The amount of times I've dotted an 'r' or crossed an 'l' is embarrassing!

Me too - I can find my own writing illegible if its dotted or crossed incorrectly. Since swapping to an italic style I have had less problems.

I've always been a j-dotter. :P When I was able to use my right hand and write quickly, the dots over i's and j's were just somewhere in the vicinity of the corresponding i or j. Now that I'm writing with my left hand at a slower pace, I take great pride in putting dots precisely above the corresponding i or j. Only retired people have time for such persnicketiness (is that really a word?).

Like Judybug, I've always been a j dotter. :) Unlike Judybug, in retirement I haven't always taken the time to be so careful--so sometimes my dotting isn't in exactly the right place! But if I don't dot at all (unless I'm in a BIG, BIG hurry & don't notice), I feel like what I've written is unfinished--almost like I've left out a letter in a word!

I always dot my i's and j's and cross my t's, but like Patrick, not always at the right place. If I'm doing careful calligraphy, it's all at the right place, but if I'm just "Writing" then no.

I dot my "i"s dot my "j"s and cross my "t"s I also make sure that all the accents e.g. éèçàêîûëï ect. are in the right place I can go crazy if I can not type Hélène or français or español or ... because the software (usually online forms) do not count accented charaters as letters

Nope, not since taking Spanish in high school. I lost points for dotting my i's, since they looked like accent marks.

Besides, in HS speed was of the essence, so the second saved by not dotting each i equalled more time to write good notes. Today, I might dot an i if I think it will be noticed, but my every-day scrawl is dot-free. I do cross my t's though.

I'm taking an extension course in Ancient Greek.... iotas are not supposed to be dotted. It is a hard habit to break.

Oh! The antici..............pation. ;)

I try to dot my i's and j's and cross my t's. Like many others, they may not always be in the right spot, but they're normally there. Normally.

I had to go check but I do dot and cross as taught by Mrs. Mayo long long ago in School!

How about this? I find that lately my fingers and brain aren't always in sinc when typing. I will reverse letters, not because I don't know the spelling but because the fingers on one hand seem to get ahead of the fingers on the other hand! I thought the TYPO phenomena was just a computer thing but in looking through my journal I see words that I know perfectly how to spell with letters reversed. How can I explain these WRITE-O's?

Late-onset dyslexia....or just old age? Lol. I've noticed I also do this once or twice per 50-100 journal pages. The weird part is it will be one ENTRY per 50-100....but typically it will occur 2-3 times in that one post. Not often enough to really worry me, but enough to think my brain may have a cold solder joint somewhere that loosens when writing particularly quickly.

Doug :

This is an interesting opinion from a respected calligrapher.
