great review

In the days gone by, people believed that if a person touched an object, that object would form a bond with a part of their soul.

Today such a thought seems almost absurd....Until you enter the realm of Montblanc's master craftsmen.

At reference of not having an 18 K nib. from my reading in Richard Binder's site, you can not make an 18 K nib flexible or semi flexible, you can with a 14 K nib.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

hello BBO. i don't know if your post had to do with the supposedly semi-flex Valor nib (i wouldn't even call it that. it's just springy), but my Pilot VP 18k has the same, if not more, spring than the Valor's 14k.

... Perhaps as a side effect, perhaps as a production anomaly, perhaps by design, or maybe just plain ole' because, this nib also had an even bigger surprise in store for me. Check out this writing sample:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v719/michaelwhitesides/writingsample.jpg

You got it! It's actually a semi-flexible nib, and the feed keeps up. The line width varies from 0.35 mm with little pressure to 1.0 mm with pressure. ....

Very interesting discovery of an unexpected contemporary semi-flex. Thanks, Michael. <img src="https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hi saintsimon,

What makes a nib semi-flex and what does that do for you?

Thanks

Thanks for that review. I have one and love up, but managed to snag one on the board for around $200 which seemed most sensible. Thank You again Michael.

I just got one of these for Christmas, and I'm disappointed. It's the most expensive pen I own, and the barrel threads are so stiff it is almost impossible to screw or unscrew the section. I was told by the company that we purchased it from that it was "normal" and that "the others I tried are also very tight". Has anyone else had an issue with stiff threads on these?

It's normal. I had the same "issue" before realizing that the screwing was getting better and better at each ink replenishing. You may even find, after a while that the screwing was become so easy that, in fact, the opposite issue may arise : the barrel would slightly unscrew while writing. :gaah: I now screw it firmly in place and everything is ok. B)

The Valor is an excellent performer and my best pen as of today. :notworthy1:

Jean-Paul,

Thanks for letting me know. I had a feeling it might loosen up over time. Do you happen to remember how long/how many fillings it took, roughly, to loosen up? I've tried it maybe 10-15 times so far, and it's only slightly loosened.

I Derek,

You shall get to that point in another 5 to 10. Don't forget the barrel is acrylic (including the inside threading which has to get some use). Maybe you may just add a few tiny drops of silicone grease on the acrylic threading. This would surely be helpful in order not to exercise to much force on the rather fragile barrel.

Happy new year 2012 !

I was thinking that, too, about the silicone grease. Thanks for your help!

One of these turned up today. The medium nib is broader than normal Sheaffer mediums (e.g. Agio) and I prefer the Valor. It's pretty similar to a Lamy medium. The barrel threads are indeed stiff, but for the last turn only; I suspect this is intentional as the cap is threaded and you wouldn't want to unscrew the barrel instead of the cap. Maybe they're tapered at the end?

I like the pen but the cap is really showboating - it's enormous and I wouldn't want to post it. However, the pen is long enough to comfortably use without posting. In contrast, my Touchdown Imperial and Triumph Imperial (with identically-dimensioned nibs to the Valor) are so short that they really have to be posted. I have an odd grip (pen resting between second and third finger) which requires more pen than normal.
