Lamy 2000

What started this ramble is that Viseguy's Lamy 2000 just knocked me out! :o  Just as you said it is the quintessential example of a pen built to be used constantly, without regard for aesthetics other than what's necessary to make it do its job. It fits my idea of traditional German engineering completely!

It's a great pen. I'd call the design sleek rather than sterile. ;) There is an abstract, almost mathematical beauty to it.

Sadly, my 2000 has been underused in my "rotation", which lately has consisted of my un-put-downable Aurora Optima with Mottishawed B nib and little else. The 2000 still has the same load of Noodler's Aquamarine that it had two months ago, Roger. I just tried writing with it now, and it started immediately and without hesitation. Like I said, it's a great pen.

Great! One o' those will be in my accumulation soon. Just trying to hold off a bit to convince Helen that I haven't gone off the deep end, quite yet!

Hi,

I have a Lamy 2000. I was trying to avoid this pen, but I must say that although it is huge, I can hold it really comfortably on that metal hood. One great pen!

Well, my Lamy 2000 is going to Germany for a nib swap, so when it comes back, it goes everywhere. It is just a rugged pen.

That sure is a nice looking pen, I have my sights on a 2000 and a studio. Suprisingly, they are very affordable especially with the piston filler on the 2000.

I agree, the Lamy 2000 is very affordable when you consider what the average piston filler with a gold nib costs. I did look at the Lamy Studio Palladium, but went with the Stainless version of the Studio instead. Still, if I were to choose one over the other I would go with the 2000.

I'm using my Lamy 2000 right now to write my philosophy seminar paper, and I also have to say, it's well worth the money. If you like piston fillers, this is a great pen/nib at a great price.

My goal: to write it out of ink before the night's out. That would put me near the end of this dreadful paper.

Hi,

It is only 3 MM longer uncapped than the M200.

I am very happy and comfortable with it even though most of the pen sticks out of my hand when I am writing with it.

For your information, this pen holds 1.5 ML of ink which is a bit more than a Pelikan and when properly lubricated (Mine was lubricated by Lamy Germany) slides down as smoothly as any other pen.

It is big, but not big enough to take the title of biggest pen. It is smaller than my Reflex and shorter than my Sailor. It is one of my shortest pens. It is not as thick as my Level 65.

Update: A month or two ago, I bought a Lamy 2000 with some money I won in an online (no, not a pen forum  ) contest. It is not a small pen, but it is a nice weight, lightweight I would say...but not lightweight in a bad way, if you know what I mean. As I said before, I think the pen looks bigger than it really is because of the semi-hooded nib :) It's a great pen!

hey apollo, it seems we have similar tastes in both pens and music! i take it the lamy studio is a thinner pen c/w the 2000? do you have a pic of both together?

as soon as i see a 2000 l.e. (the all stainless steel one) on the marketplace or greenboard, i'm snapping it up. :)

Hi davyr, here are a few pics of the Studio and 2000 together. The 2000 is a little shorter and only slightly wider in the middle area.

Thanks for the pictures Apollo. They have helped me place the Studio as consideration for my next purchase.

Hi,

Thanks for the pictures! :)

Unfortunately, I can't use the Studio because I hold on the tip of the metal hood. :(

Hi Emrecan. Yes, the Studio (stainless version) does appear to have the same type of nib and feed as the Safari, except it's polished. It's just as stiff too, but writes very well.

Almost all Lamy FPs (except the 2000 and some gold nibs) have the exact same steel nib/feed unit, so you can easily exchange the nibs between the pens, or buy new nibs for each pen. The steel nibs are cheap, so you can customize your pen with nibs that are not regular, e.g. Italics like on the Joy pens and more ...

Apollo and all,

Thanks for your input about the Lamy 2000.

My after Christmas shopping for myself I had three choices:

Sheaffer Legacy 2 on sale at Pen Hero @ 50%

Sailor 1911 M on sale @ http://www.pengallery.com/

Lamy 2000 on sale @ http://www.pengallery.com/

After much researching, which was quite fun, I decided against my initial birthing desire to spring on the last chance offer to get a touchdown filling Legacy 2. (I love my Pilot VP but have to fill the thing after three small pages, so I've been looking at large in capacity as well).

My main desire was something that writing well without flaw; hence it is a writing instrument first and foremost. A second close factor was quality and design because I have bombed buying entry level fountain pens in the recent past that write horribly (Waterman Expert II, Sheaffer Prelude x2).

This is my long message to say that when I searched for most recommended pens I felt the Sailor 1911 and the Lamy 2000 came up the most(plus the MB #149, which is yet a dream). The Lamy caught my eye right away in design and ink capacity. It also had no complaints on how it wrote and it appeared to have some flex in the nib, which caught my eye.

Needless to say, I purchased the Lamy 2000 yesterday from Pengallery and I hope that it not only is up to par with the smooth wet and flex writing of the Pilot VP, but will also hold 3 times the ink.

To sum up this personal experience/rant I might have gave the Legacey a second chance, but I was afraid the Legacy would feel to large and heavy and in addition, might not flex as much as the VP.

Damn I wrote an essay. I'm excited to gaze upon my new Lamy 2000 when it arrives. It wouldn't have happened without your help in taking the time to review the pen. Frankly, this board is worth the weight of a couple really nice pens.

That is if you can find one  I was in a pen store and I saw a Lamy box with a Stainless 2000 in it and got really excited until I realized it was the ballpoint!
