Hello from Washington, DC

I’ve been fountain pen user since 1957 (6th grade, for those counting 😅) and an enthusiast since 1976.  Recently, while trying to catalog my pens, I realized that I wanted a history of a number of them, which eventually led me to FPN.  I am incredibly impressed by the wealth of knowledge on this site.  I hope that I can become a valuable contributor here.

Since the early ‘80’s I have gifted several relatives and friends with pens that, on hindsight, I wish that I had gotten for myself.  And so, I’ve become an enthusiast of a different kind.  One guy told me, that since I would not trade or sell any of my pens, that I was an “accumulator”.  I think it was meant to be an insult. 😂😂

Hi Logan. Nice introduction!

No, that was not an insult but an observation.

Most folks around here typically agree that there are 3 main categories of pen people.  Enthusiasts/users, accumulators, and collectors.  Search here on FPN, as it has been discussed before.

I consider myself a collector first and then an accumulator. I collect several distinct FP types, but also dislike parting with any of my pens, even though some are duplicates and even triplicates.

For example, I collect Montblanc Writers series FPs and sets.  I currently have 3 MB Hemingway FPs collected over the decades, and for various reasons, as well as 3 MB Agatha Christie FPs, two of them being the vermeil versions. And several other multiples in other categories.  I really need to sell some of the multiples and buy some others I would like, but don't really want to at this time.

Some would call me a mess! 😁  But I'm a happy mess!  And I will curate my pens better down the road.

Some of my pens.

@BVLogan -- There's a similar description someone used on here a number of years ago: "accumul-user" ( think that's how it was spelled).  It means people who actually use the pens they own, especially either vintage pens or high end/flashy ones that are mostly bought by "collectors" to display in a case.

As for me, the only pens in my stash that I *don't* write with are a bunch of vintage ones that I haven't gotten the chance (or money) to get them up and running again.

Haha, yeah, well I didn’t give it too much attention.  I actually thought it was pretty funny.

I think that describes me pretty well.  But a recent acquisition has me in a quandary: I recently bought a pen that I have wanted for more than 25 years, fully intending on using it periodically.  However, it is in mint condition — with all of its original papers and packaging.  And now I don’t know if I have the nerve to fill it. 😩

A friend of mine gave me what turned out to be a Pelikan M200 which has the Bayer logo as an imprint on the barrel.  She got it off Freecycle and I suspect that it was some sort of retirement gift (Bayer has a facility in the Pittsburgh area) that just got thrown into a drawer unused.  Even the BOX it was in seemed to be in pristine condition.

Have I used it?  Oh HECK YES!  The only pens I *don't* use are a bunch of vintage ones that I haven't had a chance to get fixed yet.
