Fanyantan Qinghai Wave

According to Soe & Soe:

Qinghai Wave is a chromoshading ink appearing green when wet with pink shading and teal toned haloing. There are 6 inks in Season 4 from Fanyantan, inspired by scenes found in nature.

According to Chatgpt Qingahi translate to: Blue/green Sea

In a nutshell: Gimmicky, watery, low lubrication, pricey ink, for ink nerds and artsy people ;)

Gorgeous pale green leaning celadon ink, made in China. Writing experience with Safari was like water, most nibs were between scratchy to atrocious. With Kanwrite flow was inconsistent with the flex, either putting too much ink or drying up mid-sentence.

Ink is suitable for journaling, artwork, ink wash and calligraphy. The haloing affect is subtle and dependant on paper, pen & lighting.  Also, you need heavy application, which might cause woolly lines on most papers, I used.

Ink needs smooth paper, soft buttery nib. This is an ink that one can watch dry under a magnifying glass, if you need a distraction during boring meetings it might be for you :D

I could clean the pen with only water (it stained the transparent section of Kakuno), but it needed 12 hour minimum soaking.

Bottom line, if you’re curious buy a few samples and see if it’s for you or not.

@yazeh, you find the most interesting inks to review!  Even though they're not often inks I want to buy (for which my wallet is thankful), I always enjoy the quotations and your drawings.  Cat and mouse are getting to seem like old friends. :)  Thank you for all the time you put into these great reviews!

Twist my arm, why don't you? ;) :D

Whoa!  That chroma is cool, even if the lubrication isn't. :)

Can't say the color in the writing samples wows me.  But the look in the photo of Midori is kinda cool - you can see the chroma-shading.  Good quotes. :)

Something about it reminds me of Jinhao Bamboo Green (or was it Green Bamboo?).  Maybe the color separation.  I suspect it's mostly in my imagination, though.

Once again, I prefer the color left behind in the water test.  Also, that water test drawing looks fun  Is kitty trying to steal the umbrella? :D

The ink does look interesting when used for a wash.  Love your swirling ocean! :D   Hold tight, mateys!

Thanks for an great review of an unusual ink, @yazeh!

:D Ironically, I've been fighting to find the right pen for the new IG inks, we've been testing. I've gone through so many pens, but I like them more.

One thing can be said about these inks, is the chroma. I believe, I've got a another one from this brand with exciting chroma. Hope it's well behaved ;)

Wow.  That chroma has just about everything!

Though I have seen Storied Blue in use (Kaiteki Art's youtube channel), I don't have any, nor the other comparisons.

Given the ink's properties, I'd only use it for sketching, with a glass dip pen.

But thanks, @yazeh!  I never even heard of this brand.  Thanks for introducing it, and for the quotes and sketches.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

"Cobweb of the mind" would make a great inspiration quote!

Thank you, @yazeh, for this quote, for the ink review, and especially for these marvellous drawings. I like especially the one with the ship with cat-skull-sail - it reminds me of the famous snake drawing of A. de Saint-Exupéry.  :)  And, going with the wind can't be wrong ... 🤭

Mouse had to suffer a bit during the water test, lost a bit of its green fur. But I like how Cat, at least, tried to protect Mouse. It is such a good sign watching their friendship growing all the time! 👍 ;) :)

And yes, some inks are not meant to be used for writing. This one may have been designed for swatches or painting. But the biggest surprise was that this next to no dye containing ink still can stain - at least for a while! 😮

Looking forward to the upcoming ink reviews!

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:33

    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). Every hobby needs a hobby, eh ...

    • JungleJim 1 Sept 1:55
Perhaps it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times to get that person to appear, though with @Sailor Kenshin you only have to say it twice?

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
    • RegDiggins 23 July 12:40
Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
