hi from china

I’m from China.

My obsession with fountain pens started back in high school.

Back then, I collected them partly because I thought using a fountain pen made someone look more educated and sophisticated—like they had great handwriting.

My handwriting was terrible.

It still is, honestly.

*(bleep)*, how did I end up buying so many pens?

If only I’d spent that money on gold nibs instead…

But hey, if I had gold nibs, I’d *definitely* practice my handwriting.

Then I got a gold nib pen… and thought, *maybe I should get a few more*.

Running low on funds… so I turned to vintage Japanese pocket pens. Small nibs, but gold and dirt cheap.

*Damn*, these write so smoothly—better grab a couple more…

But man, a lot of these old pocket pens have chipped lacquer…

Decided to refinish them with cashew lacquer and raden.

Spent way too much (for me, though rich folks might laugh—it’s less than a single pocket pen).

Painted a few vintage Japanese pocket pens with cashew lacquer… only to have them stolen. Heartbreaking.

Maybe I’ll redo the lacquer work someday when I have time.

Western pens? Too broad for Chinese characters—they bleed. Hard pass. Not into Chinese pens either; their nib engravings are boring. Love Sailor’s older nib designs (their new ones are meh).

Can’t afford pens over ¥1,000.

Own a few "Three Japanese gold nib" entry-level pens.

Why does the Pilot Custom 74 feel worse than the 78G+?

Have two Sailor 21K gold nib pens—obsessed with the anchor engraving on the nibs.

Welcome to FPN.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.
