Twist version of Kokuyo mechanical pencil?

Recommended Posts

Kokuyo makes an inexpensive plastic mechanical pencil called the Enpitsu Sharp (aka Good Tools). It is shaped like a conventional hexagonal wooden pencil. Refill leads are fed at the back end and you click feed the lead through the body. It has no clip and no eraser. Very basic mechanical pencil at a budget price ($2.80 at Jetpens as of the time of this post). I really like this design, but I wish it had a twist mechanism rather than a click mechanism for advancing and retracting the lead, kind of like the Papermate Sharpwriter. That way, you could attach a common rubber cap eraser on the back end and not interfere with the lead advancing mechanism. I've attached a conceptual render of what I'm thinking of.

Does such a product exist? I'm not interested in a heavy duty pencil like the $50 Retro 51 Tornado. I'm only interested in something cheap like the Kokuyo or the Papermate, but not disposable like the Papermate (which doesn't take refills). I also don't like that the Papermate has a clip that is part of the body mold, and that the twist mechanism is at the writing end rather than the back end. Surely I can't be the only person who has thought of this product design. I mean, the Enpitsu Sharp is almost exactly what I'm talking about; its design just has the wrong lead advancing mechanism (from my point of view).

I don't know about that, but I suspect that something like that already existed at some point as a vintage mechanical pencil/leadholder, and I don't think the answer would likely best be found here - do an internet search for "leadhead pencil blog" - I have dipped my toes into buying vintage mechanical pencils, I've found that a very large proportion of the vintage pencils that aren't high in collectible value (=affordable) are fully functional or relatively easy to tune up to get working again.

The vast majority of the mechanical pencils and leadholders on eBay I've looked at are twist-to-advance.

Hope this helps!

About all I've really seen are the Papermates, but once those run out, you usually can pull the remnants of the lead out and stick a new piece in its place. I've not seen anything other than clickers that can be fed from the anus, for which I would argue there are better choices.

If it isn't too bright for you, it isn't bright enough for me.
