Lennon Tool Bar - 2023 Summer Limited - Cat General

 Review #178

Lennon Tool Bar is a Taiwanese company.

Cat General is one of the 4 limited 2023 Edition inks of the . The other 3 are, Bird Monster ( Green grey) Catfish Spirit (purple grey)  and  Rabbit God (Pink).

It is still available from retailers all over the world as of March 2025.

This is my first foray in Lennon Tool Bar inks.

Ink is difficult to define, everything about it, is pen/ paper/ nib dependant. On each paper it’s subtly (or not so) different. ;)

Colour is difficult to define: It’s a sepia/ gold with a hint of pink. Color/ shading is pen/ paper dependant.

At first, I thought the flow average, lubrication slightly below average, but by the time I reached B nib, flow was below average, and lubrication low.

I liked the colour on some papers, hated it on others. It had shading on some papers, less on some, extreme on Iroful.

Ink is very well behaved on copy paper and shades with some nibs.

Dry times are about 20s on Rhodia. Cleaning is a pain in the fountain pen :D  Give me a pigment ink any ie but not this one. I had to put the Safari in cleaning solution (twice), ultrasonic twice. I made a mistake of filling a vintage pen, I’m still cleaning residual ink after two days, and several marination periods in cleaning solution.

I would recommend this ink only for pens that can be easily dismantled.

That's an interesting color.  I wasn't familiar with this brand at all, and not sure what I think of this one (the cleaning issue might be a deal breaker for me).  But thanks as usual for the comprehensive review and the fun artwork.

@LizEF did a review of another ink by this brand recently. It's a pity cleaning was such an issue. With some pens, I get lazy and shove them in the Ultrasonic wit the solution and let it sonic to death. But for the review I had to take it through all the steps and suffer the pain, so to speak :D

Well, at least it's not boring (from your description and the chroma)! :D   Poor flow and below-average lubrication sounds not so different from the single LTB ink I reviewed... :(  Makes me wonder if this is the norm for them...

Looks too pink-leaning on Rhodia, but that quote!  :lticaptd:Fabulous! :sm_cat:   (All the quotes are good - but that first one.... :D )

Shocker of shockers, I like the color best on Iroful, but I'm not really excited by the color at all - in the scans.  The photos look nice.  The swatch drawing is great, color...  I guess this really is one where you have to find all the right conditions - and even then, there's a chance it won't be pleasant to use, even if it's pleasant to look at...  Not a promising ink...

Love getting the pre- and post-water versions of that drawing! :) Thanks!

Aaah, relief!  The artwork makes up for all that went before! :)   The ink makes a great background for Sever - very ancient and deserty. Manicure is a crack up!  Careful with them clippers, Mousey!  Well done, General Cat!  Must have been quite the feat, earning the Order of the Mouse! :)

Thank you for enduring an annoying ink to bring us such wonderful drawings, @yazeh!

I believe it is. I think it's the same for Wearingul. And a few others "chromoshading" inks, I'm reviewing are even worse in the lubrication department :)

I was hooked by the name. I got a few others also based on feline names 😸 This color is best for washes. It reminds me of old parchments & Egyptian mausoleums :) I'm sure @namrehsnoom would be able to tame this ink.

Holy chroma!  And isn't the ink's name right up your artistic alley?

The sketches live up to that, and I'm cracking up at Kitteh Beauty Salon.  I might get some of this just to make the chroma, and pin it on my wall. 🤣

@yazeh, thanks once again for introducing an unknown to me ink and making life colorful with your detailed, entertaining InkSplorations!  Keep ‘em coming!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

The chorma is amazing and it's the reason why it's so difficult to clean, that red/ orange dye is a nightmare 😛

Maybe the makers spend too much time on r/fountainpens where everyone brags about their triple-extra-super broad glossy smooth firehoses... ;)

:D  Exactly!  Klaw, who before Smoke would rarely sit on me, will now come at least once per day and pat at my leg to indicate he wants to jump up and sleep on me.  I am, of course, required to recline a little, make some room, and tolerate it when his kneading occasionally reaches skin...  And when he demands one arm, I have no say in the matter and must be content to use only one...

This is probably specific to this ink. Often times the red dye in inks makes it very difficult to clean. I doubt with a pale pink you'll have much of a problem. You can check this review, thought here's no mention of cleaning:

Great pics, not so great ink. I hate it when pens are a pain in the *ss to clean. When trying a new ink, I typically have it inked up in five or so pens. Not so much fun cleaning all of these.

Like you, I can forgive a lot in an ink, especially as I use and have lot of pens permanently filled with pigment inks. But nothing is worse than inks that refuse to be cleaned :)

A pleasure. I have 2 other Lennon Tool Bar inks to review, but frankly I don't know when I will get to them as I have too many samples to review. They are not in the colour range of Rabbit God, though. But it might be that this brands like some other Far East  brands might be low in lubrication.

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.

@FineFinerFinest: have you seen this thread? https://www.fountainpennetwor...nging-pelikan-nibs/#comments

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). Every hobby needs a hobby, eh ...

Perhaps it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times to get that person to appear, though with @Sailor Kenshin you only have to say it twice?

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...
    • OldFatDog 26 July 19:41
I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
    • RegDiggins 23 July 12:40
Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

I have a Conway Stewart Trafalgar set. It was previously owned by actor Russell Crowe and includes a letter from him. Can anyone help me with assessing its value?
