My first Pelikan

Recommended Posts

@FleetAdmiralBlackBeard -- It's a lovely pen, but the M800/M405 size is just too large and heavy for me.  I'm hoping that in a couple of years they do what they did with the Stresemann, and release it in a smaller size (like M400/M405).  And I was lucky in that it was the one time in my life that I had the budget for a pen that expensive (and the M405 Blue Black I bought at the same time which was ALMOST as much...).

They're still my two most expensive pens, but worth every penny....

And what other people said is absolutely true -- before you know it, you'll have a flock....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Naughty, naughty: you are sounding very convincing or persuasive; but the poor man said in his first post that this 800 would be his last pen purchase for a long time...!  (Smirk, smirk: we all know differently, though, don't we?)  🤨

We all know the poor man doesn't stand the slightest chance once these birds have gotten to it. 🤪

If it's of any help to you in rezeesting the temptation to buy one, I second what carola said about the red-striped M800...

...the post-2022 pens don't have any ink window. For me, this is a sad reduction of utility to the end-user of the pen.
On the older ones, the 'dark' stripes between the red stripes were translucent.
I know from owning a vintage green-striped M800 (and a vintage 400, & a vintage M400 too, bcuz they breeds in captivity, innit?) that this makes the whole body of the pen an 'ink window', and yet it is one that can only be seen by the user.
It is discreet, yet is superbly functional. It is a peerless design IMO.

As such, I recommend that you don't buy a brand new red-striped M800, but instead seek out an older M800 with the translucent stripes.

That said, all of us here know that Resistance is Futile ;)

Good luck!

Good thing a 1000 is not available in red stripe.  If it were, right now I'd be thinking of ways to hide a new pen from my wife.

That cream and blue is a BEAUTY.

Yes , it is quite beautiful. I am glad I chose this as my first Pelikan.

My wife usually does not scrutinize my purchases at all , but I am fully certain that she will by the end of the year, because there are too many pens that I must have……..actually, that will be the sign for me to slow down, when she faints from the pen expenditures……. Sounds like a healthy plan.

The secret is that once your collection reaches a certain mass, new pens will not be noticed.  I recently bought a bright orange pen and used it in plain sight of the entire world.  If I had been asked about it, I might have said that it had been in my pen case unused for a year or two.  Nah, there's no way she would have bought that tale.

Well, I hate to disappoint you; but there <is> actually a red-striped M1000 -- it came out as an LE, has raden (mother of pearl) strips between the red and will cost you an arm, a leg and a kidney, most likely.  You used to be able to get one for north of two grand; but nowadays you might find one for around <six>!  How're your brownie points in your wife's eyes, I wonder?  (Sell one of your children?)

😄😛

I just took a look at that pen.  Now the question is: does my wife know how to load a shotgun?

Mine knows . I taught her!

Well , believe it or not I found the Edson I wanted, new old stock……..and it happened rather quickly.

So that leaves my with one more pen for the year. My red M800. I guess I really have to think if I want a used one with the see thru lines or a new one from Atlas. But that will be my last pen purchase for sure for 2025. The wife and the children do have to eat, after all.

I find the 800's a bit big for me. Do have a W. Germany black&gold on and a black and silver one.

Based on a 800 size. I do have a 915 green Hunter Toledo (1994 only 3,000 made), LE, that because of the silver overly is really a lot heavier pen....but pretty. Enabling bomb on the way.

The green pen in this live auction house win.

The top black one is a W. Germany 800, with that slight tad more springy vintage nib. Nibs after 1997 are stiffer.

Will eventually get a 700 Toledo, a 400 sized Toledo.DaYPoQV.jpg

From my Green pens in the green pens thread. 7 are Pelikans. The other brand pen, that looks white, is actually greenish.
