My first Pelikan

FleetAdmiralBlackBeard

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone !

New to this Pelikan section  and just a few days on the overall forum .

I have restarted my fountain pen journey (after a 2 decade break) since Christmas after getting a Scriveiner fountain pen , which in turn triggered me to get 3 Waterman pens from Atlas in quick succession. I have really enjoyed the Watermans, have liked that I can register them to extend the warranty, and have send a pen for their free nib exchange program to France twice already……

I have , however , been very intrigued  and curious about Pelikan. And I decided my 4th pen should be a Pelikan ….I was leaning towards a M1000 , but I like my pens to fit in  my jacket pocket, and I am also left handed, so a pen of that size would not work. So I decided on a 800. Originally, I  wanted the traditional stripped design in red, but then  I saw the M800 in cream and blue special edition…and fell in love. Immediately reminded me of the pre revolutionary French standard.  So I have ordered it, broad nib, and should be arriving shortly.  Very excited to get my first Pelikan.

What should I know? Does Pelikan offer extended warranty? Will they replace my nib at no cost like Waterman? Any advice ? I am hoping to take this to the office, along with the others in my rotation.

This will be my last pen for a long time, so I am hoping I am not so smitten that I feel the need to buy more..

Thanks !

Congrats on the lovely blue/cream. If it was an M600, I'd be all over it.

If you bought it from an authorized dealer, Pelikan allows you 1 nib exchange within the first 30 days. Only problem is you have to send the whole pen to them, which would be Chartpak here in the US or Hanover if in EU. I'm not aware of them offering an extended warranty, I've never heard it mentioned.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

M800s are a bit too large for my hand, but I LOVE my M200/M205 and M400/M405 size pens.  Of course I also like the lower end pens as well (I have a couple of the P22s that I really should put back in rotation at some point, and a P10 Twist -- I think -- that was swag from one of the Pelikan Hubs I went to.  And should also think about putting the M120 Iconic Blue back into rotation as well....

Interesting.  I went the other way.  I started with the M600, which was slightly too small for my hand.  Bought the M800, which was perfect.  I think the M1000 would be too large. I currently have the M800 inked with a Lamy 2000, a Sailor 1911L,  and a Platinum President.  I like having choices in the morning.  😁

As a left handed man I am certain the 1000 would be a problem for me. My grandfather had a very large MB fountain pen (that I can’t  locate !!!)  that I was never able to write with because of its size and my “hooked” angle of writing.

The Cream Blue M800 was my first Pelikan also, received as a birthday gift from my family collectively.  It’s the first pen of my (quite small) collection that my wife used and said “Oooh, this is NICE…”  😊

Thanks for the reply, how  do you like it?  I understand it came out last year….I am concerned about staining it with ink because of the cream color….. I only use Waterman Serenity Blue or J Herbin Eclat de Saphir …..

If you like the colour of those inks, I advise you to buy a bottle of Edelstein Sapphire for your M800.
I also urge you to buy some Edelstein Topaz! ;)

And, once you have overcome your fear of staining, if you would like to use your M800 at work I definitely advise you to buy some Edelstein Tanzanite.
When dispensed from Souveräns it is just glorious!

I do advise you to read reviews on here of those inks to see what other folks think of them, but I also stress that you must take into account that the Edelstein range was designed for use in Souverän pens, and that the inks work best in these pens.

Slàinte,
M.

Really enjoying it!  I like the extra weight of the brass piston compared to the 400/600.  I have an EF as I knew they tend to lay down a lot of ink.  I haven’t had much trouble with the cream part staining (yet).

Thanks everyone for the replies- received my pen today.  Remember , this is my first Pelikan, so please do not kill me for some of my observations ,

First I have to say that I am so glad I got the broad nib. I love it. As is. I kept on hearing and reading  how these are so broad and that I should get a medium , but I absolutely love it.

Filling it up was so easy and writing with it is great.

The pen is beautiful and the color combination is so aesthetically pleasing.

The only thing I must say , and again please do not kill me, is that I feel a little strange about having paid 600 dollars for a pen that is resin, …….but then again I also pay a similar amount for sunglasses of a similar material. But nothing looks or feels cheap . It’s very substantial .

My verdict is that I will definitely get another Pelikan. I have my sights on a red stripped 800 next……and maybe delve into my first used pen experience by getting a Waterman Edson 🫣

Nice! And the Waterman Edson… I am a Pelikan fan through and through but having tried one I can say without any hesitation that it is one of the nicest feeling and writing pens I have ever tried. Simply sublime.

I still recall trying it the first time and putting it down sighing and thinking ”Oh boy… this is going to cost me”. The owner of the pen, a friend of mine who is also a collector, must have recognized that look because he laughed out loud. 😅

Some day…

See? Your Pelikan is already getting ready to breed... This won´t take long for you to own two and from then on, it´s only a matter of time until you have a whole flock sitting on your desk (says the woman who owns 40 Pelikans by now, apart from all the other pens). 😆

Have fun and enjoy your bird.

Ah... another word on the red-striped Pelikan: The striped specimens used to be transparent. The new ones aren´t anymore. This looks different and you don´t get to see how much ink is left in the reservoir. So if you want to buy one and you prefer either the transparent or the non-transparent version, it makes sense to either see it for yourself or make the seller check which version it is, before you buy it.

You’re making me want to revisit this pen. I saw it at my local shop in November and was underwhelmed, but you have taken some really nice photos.

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

I have no ties or relationship. Just a very happy customer. He is a very experienced Montblanc expert.

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

Hello, could someone recommend a reliable venue: on line or brick and mortar in Fairfax, VA or Long Island, NY to purchase the soft parts and a converter to restore my dad's Sheaffer Legacy? please. Thanks a mill.

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
