I use taps and dies, much easier on a smaller metal lathe (especially for multi-start threads) compared to cutting threads with a single point cutting tool via gear arrangement.

I make relatively large pens; I use triple start M13x0.8 for the cap / barrel thread & single start M10x0.75 for the barrel / section thread.

The thread choice for the section / nib thread will depend on which nib you use. I use Bock #6 nibs, which uses a M7.9x0.6 thread.

Thank you for the information. It would seem really difficult to do cap threads like vintage pens that are 4 start, sounds like you have made quite a few pens.  I wonder if anyone does do 4 start barrel threads at all??

Not that I'm aware of. large tap and die manufacturers make those 3-point start taps and dies specifically for us pen makers.

We purchase them as group purchases or through large retailers which purchase a quantity, such as Turners Warehouse etc.
