Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite

This is review #323 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This ink was gifted to me by a generous FPNer.  The microscope slide was boring. Cleaning was fairly easy, but I did use a pen flush to speed things - a tiny bit of blue wanted to cling.  If you don't need to absolutely ensure it's all gone, plain water will be sufficient.

This is my kinda color!  Really enjoyed the writing experience, too.

Sorry, forgot to note the performance on absorbent paper (bit feathery) and on copy paper (minor fuzz) during the review, so the review page images don't have it either.

Erratum: "...I think your EF nib will like this in regardless..." - "in" should be "ink".

Zoomed in photo (Might be a smidge under-saturated, but this is very close to what I see.)

Scan of Completed Review (Pretty close. Color is maybe a little under-saturated.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Pretty close.)

Line width (The "I" in "Ink:". Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 295µm. With 323 inks measured, the average line width is 297µm.) (You can see a little of the red sheen.)

Great! My kinda color three!! Sorta a purple-black, maybe with a touch of blue. There are enough blue-blacks out there but this one has always been a real hit for me  :happycloud9: Thanks for reviewing it !!!

Give me blue or give me black but I refuse to buy the gross abomination when the two are combined.

Now if you will excuse me I'll be resetting my eyes with some lovely reds and oranges and pinks.  Ah...blessed happy colors.  I am at peace once again.

Thank you for the review. May this ink be discontinued post-haste!

 This is a fascinating comment to me, since I avoided this ink because I thought it looked too purple in online images.  In person, I think it just looks blue-black (and I don't see purple in the water-test, for example).  But here you are calling it a purple-black.  Human eyesight, brains, and color perception is a mystery!

I'm going to try it in my Visconti Homo Sapiens London Fog next time it needs a fill.  Aonibi turned purple in said pen.  Anderson Pens Oshkosh Denim constantly hard starts.  Maybe third time will be the charm. :D If not, I may have to open up the color spectrum to find a permanent ink for that pen.

:yikes: Blasphemy!  Blue and black are only made perfect when they become one ink! ;)

:) We're going to blame your strange color preferences on cones and rods and nerves and stuffs. :D  There, now it's not your fault.  Nothing you can do about it.  We like you anyway. ;)

I love blue-blacks but the ever-so-slight hint of purple leaves me cold. Blurple is my least favorite color, well, except for mint. Great review, though.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

My color ink, too!  Though I've always heard Tanzanite was wet, as in, 'if you have a dry pen, this will cure it.'  I have soooo many blue-blacks....yet this tempts.

Our little snek is back.   With a laugh like shedding skin.  That's a good one!   My place in the world... don't get me started.  😁

@LizEF,  thanks once again for making Tuesdays magically fun... I always look forward to the review and story.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

For me and this ink, the only hint of purple would come from the red sheen.  And for whatever reason, that doesn't bother me, whereas purple in the ink itself would bother me.

@namrehsnoom did a review of Tanzanite and a shootout with it and MB Midnight Blue, both of which include chromatography, and I see no purple or red there...

:)  Even "mint" (perhaps depending on what that means) wins over blurple for me - blech.

:D  See my comments on flow.  It's an interesting one.  We'll see how it does in my very wet Visconti (either when I finish the fill of Anderson Pens Oshkosh Denim, or when I get too frustrated with its hard starts and kick it out early).

In 2022, I had this ink in a Jinhao 51a EF for a long time, and loved every second of it. What a lovely, smooth ink, even in a very budget pen. It was a fill from a Hub bottle. At the time, it was sold out everywhere and soon went out of mind. I should put it on my buy list.

Great review, as always. AWW, ESSRI 🥰

Top 5 of 26 (in no particular order) currently inked pens:

Pelikan M300 CIF, Pelikan Edelstein Golden Beryl

MontBlanc 144R F, Diamine Bah Humbug

Sheaffer 3-25 EF ringtop, Skrip Black

Waterman Caréne Black Sea, Teranishi Lady Emerald

Pilot 742 FA, Namiki Purple cartridge

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

Great review @LizEF   No more cartridges, no more Jinhaos, yay :bunny01:

The colour is elegant and classy. There's a greyish tinge, slate like quality:)

The village of 4 indeed ;) Glad to see Essri and Makhabesh bringing lightness to Quin's angst. :)

Thanks for returning to ink bottles/samples and bringing light to this grey, cold Tuesday 🙏

@LizEF Thanks as usual for the review.  Good to know that Edelstein Tanzanite has at least *some* water resistance (I seem to have somehow ended up with two bottles of it, so I should probably start using it again...).

Exactly!!  We should have a party.  I'm using up all my Waterman Mysterious Blue cartridges because they had evaporated down to almost half volume, and I didn't want to clean my Carène before using it longer (it originally had the included Waterman Serenity Blue cartridge in it), so I just stuck a Mysterious Blue cartridge in and ran with it - no problems! :D  I plan to use them all up (on my second now - think there are 2 more to go).  Maybe I'll just use all my remaining standard international carts in the Carène - looks like that's only my Kaweco - 4 colors, probably 4 carts of each...

:D Yes!  I love this sort of color.  Am very grateful to my friend across the ocean for sending me a sample.

You captured the colour well; to me this is a grey ink with a soupçon of blue; not what the box promises but still a good ink. In a Capless M and a Geha Scholier EF at the moment. For some reason it absolutely did not get on with a Pelikan MC110 1.5.

:D  So fun to read everyone's descriptions / impressions of this ink's color.  You know it's an interesting ink when everyone has their own way to describe the color.

  Interesting that it didn't work well in your Pelikan.  I'm looking forward to trying it in other pens to see which I like best.  I do have an m405, so I'll have to put some in there to see if it likes my Pelikan. :D

Well, it didn't work all that well, when I put it in my M600 Violet and White, because it seeped into the cracks in the cap.... :wallbash:

:( Sorry to hear about this.  So frustrating when pens crack.
