Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Jinhao Red

This is review #321 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This is a pinkish red, but with some orange too.  It's red, but not very dark.  The scanner hates this color - renders it hot pink.  There's only a tiny bit of sheen in the writing, and you have to go looking for it, but there was sheen on the slide, so a very wet pen and good paper will likely show sheen....  But... On Friday, I was thinking the ink was looking rather orange in my Hobonichi.  Turns out, it was the sheen.  So maybe with a little time (and perhaps a little evaporation?) the sheen will show through more.

The 10-second mark smeared a tiny bit, but the 8 and 6 didn't.  I went with 11 seconds for the dry time, but most of your strokes will dry around 5 seconds.

Cleaning was quick and easy, but this ink really likes to stain your fingers hot pink.

Zoomed in photo (Fairly close, but one monitor makes it look too orange and the other too saturated.)

Screenshot (Too dark, but otherwise close.)

Scan of Completed Review (The scanner rendered this a dark, saturated, red, which it isn't... I've corrected it as well as I can, but it's not right - too pink, I think.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Same as the zoom, slightly too orange on one monitor, too saturated on the other.)

Line width (The "I" in "Ink:". Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 360µm, with twelve divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 338µm. With 321 inks measured, the average line width is 297µm.) (You can see a little of the sheen in this image.)

Microscope image (100x. Should be more pink, especially at lower left.)
large.JinhaoRedSmear.jpg.2e7f2341c2b35a530b6a881f405e9fb7.jpg

Microscope image (100x. Image on the left should be bubblegum pink and more saturated. On the right is the edge of the cover slip. Colors not vibrant enough. I'm sure the yellow parts would be the gold sheen.)

Thank you for your review :)

That ink looks better than Lamy "red", but not enough to go out of your way to get some 😂

Wonderful review as usual  @LizEF:thumbup:

This is one of those colours, I am happy to say, that does nothing to me ;)

It's funny how it stains fingers yet is easy to clean. I was reviewing recently an ink that stained my fingers with glee and was difficult to clean. Lucky you :D

Love the microscopic images, but more so the quote, so true and often forgotten.

I also understand Quin's need for secrecy and the burden of it and Essri's village of four :)

Thanks for making the start of this cold day, warm

Ohhh, c'mon.  Someone wants us to believe this is RED?  When it's actually pinkorangecoral?

(Worse yet, I might have some.)

I see a cavalcade of those fallen stars from Studio Ghibli's Howl's Moving Castle.  And then they explode.

And yes.  Secrets are a burden.  Any way you look at it.

Oooo!  What city has my favorite Snek found?  🐍 Can't wait.

Tuesdays are magical and fun, thanks to you, @LizEF... I always look forward to the review and story!  Thisss'n made me smile out loud.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

@LizEF I'm with yazeh on this one.  I want red to be RED.  Not leaning pink or orange or burgundy.  So I can pass on this one.

But thanks as usual for the review.

Lamy Red is a low hurdle.  And yeah, unless this happens to be the exact shade for you, it's probably not worth the effort.

Yes, as soon as I saw pink, I thought I was in for a clinger, but as you say, I got lucky.

:)  The quote is a reaction to some virtual mobbing I witnessed recently (the mob was composed of people who considered themselves to have been oppressed in the recent past - I guess their experience didn't teach them compassion :( ).

 It is a strange red.

 Well, it doesn't really like having its picture taken, so goodness knows what it will look like in real life for you.

Exactly.  One should think twice before asking someone, even someone trusted, to carry an extra burden.

That's unfortunately the automatic function of a trauma, the abused will abuse, unless there's conscious, self-compassion and a healing journey :)

Shades of Diamine Wild Strawberry!

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

  Yes, there is some similarity there.  I think I'd go with the Diamine ink, though. ;)

"World is becoming more pink. I feel it in the pens, I sense it on the paper and I see it hidden in the microscopy crystals!" -- Gala-Driel of the Red Ink Forest.

Thank you, @LizEF, for this pink-red ink review , for the cliffhanger 🫣 and for generating such nice (red absorbing) ink needles 🧑‍⚕️ !

+1 👍 to what others already wrote: thank you for making an icy cold winter Wednesday morning so pinkish warm!

And yes, from the photos I would had put it in the Lamy Red / Lamy Crystal Rhodonite corner. ;) :)

One life!

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the review. These microscope pics are always amazing - they make this ink look more interesting than it appears to the naked eye. More orange and less pink for me, please. That might have resulted in a nice red-orange or orange-red - which is a type of colour I've taken a liking to.

 Yes, some inks are more interesting on the page, and others are only interesting up close.

Agreed.  I prefer my reds either darker, or at least less pink.  The sheen does help accomplish that with this one, though - but perhaps only after a little evaporation.
