Octopus Write & Draw Duck Red

Very nice, wet, lubricated ink, with nice shading (from dark to red), from Octopus with very long dry times on Japanese Paper (not for lefty over writers)

It made my two scratchiest nibs sing, pilot Kakuno EF and the Osmioird with its needlepoint copperplate nib.

Ink is well behaved on copy paper, unless you opt for a wet flex pen.  Like most pigment inks, it’s not a good idea to forget it in a drafty pen. Ink would evaporate and will make cleaning slightly difficult.

Note that all my samples bottles of Octopus inks have been more or less stained overtime by the dyes.

Art Work:

This weeks artwork is a bit of experimentation and wackiness.

Lady Kitty (The blue ink is a mixture of my De Atramentis Document /Artist Cyans that sticks to the paper like fly on a litter box :D)

Paper is a a very bad/white Hilory sketchbook.

Grandpa

This draft sketch I did with a Osmiroid needlepoint copperplate nib. The nib is not suitable for sketching. But it worked out find. The cat reminds me of my grandpa who was very elegant :)

The background is just a mixture of Lexington Gray and De Atrametis Document Cyan.

and finally la pièce de resistance :D

A day at the pond

Octopus Write & Draw Red Duck

De Atramentis Document/Artist Cyan in a brush pen, a touch  of Noodler's Lexington Gray...

Colorverse 58 Methuselah Grove (brown)

The paper is the Hilory sketchbook. It's not suitable for ink work, and the De Atramentis sticks to , if the paper is wet ....

·      Pens used: Pilot Kakuo Ef, Lamy (EF/F/M/B/ Stub 1.1), Osmiroid – Copperplate nib

·      What I liked: Colour. Shading. Lubrication.

·      What I did not like: Long dry times on Japanese  paper.

·       What some might not like: Same as above. AFOPI (Abnormal fear of pigment inks)

·      Shading: Yes, lovely.

·      Ghosting: Trace on cheap paper.

·      Bleed through: With flex nib yes

·      Flow Rate: Wet

·      Lubrication: Excellent.

·      Nib Dry-out: Did not notice.

·      Start-up:  Very good, in a well-sealed pen or a pen used regularly.

·      Saturation:  Nice red

·      Shading Potential: Excellent.

·      Sheen: Only on Iroful, silver like most Octopus w& d inks.

·      Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Did not notice.

·      Nib Creep / “Crud”: Did not notice.

·      Staining (pen): Did not notice.

·      Clogging: Did not notice.

·      Cleaning: On some pens easy, only water. With the Osmiroid it stuck to the nib. So needed more coaxing.

·      Water resistance: Excellent.

·      Availability:  50 ml bottles.

Please don't hesitate to share your experience, writing samples or any other comments. The more the merrier  :)

Not my first choice for a red ink, but I'm intrigued by how different it looks depending on the paper.  And am I seeing sheen in the close up?  Interesting....

Thanks of course for the comprehensive review and the fun artwork!

An octopus and a duck walk into a bar… 😹

Hmmm.  Yes, it's waterproof!  And is that a teeny bit of shimmer?  Wow.

Interesting quotes as well, and of course the sketches are wonderful.

I have JH Rouge Caroubier, use it in a Preppy as an editing pen. No problems.  Once I had a sample of Noodler's Fox Red, ditto.

@yazeh, thanks once again for making life colorful with your detailed, entertaining InkSplorations!  Keep ‘em coming!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

It's a nice solid red if one looks for one. The long dry times on Japanese paper is not acceptable. I had the same problem with Red Rattler's.

Yes, most Octopus Write & Draw inks have a silver sheen on Iroful paper.

The barcat says with a gravely voice: "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, they have to walk in mine" :D

No. It's the sheen, Octopus /Iroful combo ;)

It's the red ink. I have noticed that some dark red inks have difficulty to dry :(

I think I like this red. :)  And not even only on some of the papers. Even Midori pushing it a little warmer is nice.

Interesting and sometimes funny quotes.  But you missed the obvious: "Rabbit season! Duck Season!" :P

Ah, the swatches help identify its "place" in the red spectrum - thank you.  Looks a little subdued (cooler/bluer?) compared to some of the others.  Mr. Mouse has a duck boat!  :lticaptd:

Well, of course a duck is waterproof! ;)  Fishing kitty.  Alas, my poor boys have never seen a fish, and likely never will, unless I take them to Petsmart (which isn't likely, given that neither is a big fan of trips in the car)...

Such a contemplative Lady Kitty.  Grandpa kitty. :) Very nice way to remember him.  I love "A day at the pond" - absolutely fabulous.

Thanks, @yazeh, for a very enjoyable review!  Glad you got a color you enjoyed.

@LizEF, I remember that cartoon!

There's TV/DVD/video for cats, if yours are the type that watch.  I imagine there are birds and fish and such.

(One of our cats was a fan of Pokemon, and nagged me to turn on the TV at the right time.  She also fell in love with that lion-y character from Beauty and the Beast.)

My husband's old cat used to make "I see a birdie!" noises when there was some old ad for the USPS, showing an eagle!  We thought it was HILARIOUS!  Of course, if BJ had ever encountered a REAL hawk or eagle?  He'd be ducking for cover --  NOT doing what he did when "the neighborhood bruiser" (some nasty feral or semi-feral cat that was maybe 2-1/2 times BJ's size) had the temerity to come into our front yard....  Which was to make a BEELINE straight at the "bruiser" going, "How DARE you come into MY territory!"  (And the bruiser actually was know to attack people -- the guy in the upstairs apartment in the duplex across the street from our first house actually got clawed by it when it followed THEIR cat into the upstairs window and he was trying to remove it.... :yikes:).

Of course, BJ also decided at one point that HIS territory included Missy's yard as well as ours.... :headsmack:  And did not take it well when we got Obilot (who was MY cat) -- BJ was perfectly content to sit in my lap all day long *until* he heard my husband parking and coming up the walk; then it was "Daddy's home!  Daddy's home!" and racing for the front door....  And would walk ACROSS people to get to Steve....

Smoke will sometimes watch YT videos, but Klaw doesn't seem to like it so much.  Maybe I'll try a fishy video, though, and see if either takes interest. Thanks!

  Mine have never been interested the TV itself, but then, I don't really watch cartoons.  I guess I could turn on Looney Tunes or something and see if they ever notice.

Ours ignored the fish. But I've seen some cats intrigued by them if in close quarters ;)

Ours is obsessed/ hooked by cat TV. It waits patiently to jump on my lap and then begs for it. It tried a few times to find the birds behind the computer, in the screen. However she doesn't enjoy funny cat movies 😄

@inkstainedruth we used to have a non-feral long haired black cat in the neighborhood. He got into fights with every cat  way away from his territory. Once we passed his way, he had a truly demented look. Another neighbor had a cat, named after the Seinfeld character Cosmo. It was as crazy as his namesake.😄

Thank you, @yazeh, for this ink review!

I love what quotes the ink writes on Hammermil paper! ;) :)

Spoiler

Yes, I know the ink doesn't write quotes by itself. Sorry, I couldn't resist ... ;)

I intended to tell: I like the quote, the colour and your handwriting, @yazeh👍

The ink colour is not so fully in my preferred red zone, at least how it looks on the other paper types and in the chromatography.

I like all your drawings and especially "A Day at the Pond" - fabulous! :)

But ..., maybe ..., someone can explain why ducks are red. 🤔  🦆 ← ?   :)

One life!

What is your preferred red zone? Darker or lighter?

Because they're embarrassed?

Over-cooked?

Swam in a polluted pond?

Here's one from Pinterest that's quite red:
