Sheaffer Valiant/Statesman with an extra long cap

I'll be darned if I can come up with an explanation why the cap on the black pen is so much longer that all the other snorkels we've had with this cap (Valiant or Statesman).

2-5/8" on the black one versus 2-3/8" our other snorkels. The barrels are the same.

Any ideas?

I think it could be a homemade cap, black plastic is easy to find.

I will ask a friend to make an Autograph cap if the original one has cracks, maybe the original cap of this one had some problems?

It's not a matter of just changing the cap band like you would to move an autograph band to another cap.  The plastic above the band is longer.  Sheaffer was known to make design changes from time to time - I've seen all kinds of "weird" stuff that was done by Sheaffer.

Teri,  I'll send contact information on a couple of guys who know.

Snorkel Admiral plastic cap on a Valiant cap liner is close (but no white dot).  Perhaps Sheaffer's experimented with a single long 'one size fits all' plastic liner for both variants?

This has been an interesting read.  Now I'm going to have to pull out my Snorkels (including the one my husband is "borrowing" until he finds the Safari he wanted me to get him a couple of years ago when I was ordering that year's al-Star SE pen) and do a comparison of the cap length.  I know I have a couple of Valiants and just checked and have several Admirals as well, as well as several other Snorkel models.
