Interesting material.  Is that some sort of matte plastic, or is it ebonite?

Neither. It’s stained wood that has been infused with a polymer to enhance its stability and reduce the risk of cracking, commonly referred to as 'stable wood' by Chinese vendors. The process resembles 'sous-vide': the wood is placed in a pouch filled with a polymer, and pressed in a vacuum chamber, which forces the plastic into the wood fibers.
