fountain pens that you bought in 2024

This year was probably the first, in which I gave away significantly more fountain pens, than I bought new ones. So the collection seems to be decreasing from now on (which is a good thing in general).

Some new ones have been added, but many of them have moved on again immediately. I realized that I had become so demanding, that hardly any new fountain pen could satisfy me anymore. This is a bit sad, but on the other hand, it doesn't matter, since I have enough excellent pens that I enjoy writing with.

What I couldn't stop doing in this year, was buying LAMY safari in new colors.

I like every single one of them, and even more so in this group. So, I have no regrets.

But the number of new colors this year was so high (I think there were ten!) that it made me realize that this too must come to an end. And so I stopped collecting at 8 pieces.

From now on, I will leave it to others to continue the safari chronology.

What pens did you buy this year?

@christof, it is not surprising that you have become so demanding, given the amazing collection that you have!

I too have decreased the size of my collection a little. I did add a few vintages found on antique stores, but none of those will stay in my collection, since I am only keeping vintages that have very good flex nibs nowadays and none of those I found have such nibs (but I just still can't resist them, in the rare occasions that I find them).

But pens that were added to my collection were:

A Pelikan M800 Old Style (with the Medallion) with a 14k EF nib, because I needed it to pair with the pencil I had.

Pelikan M1000 Renaissance Brown M

Pilot Custom 823 Black F, because I missed the F I had and, IMO, it is the ideal travel pen.

Montblanc 149 Origin BB

Pelikan M450 Green Tortoise B - I had been looking for one for a while, so I couldn't pass on the opportunity.

And, then, there were some pens that I added because I was traveling and I always like to bring a pen back with me to remember the trip:

Visconti HS Color Collection Tuff with a Stub nib

Leonardo Dodici Mosaic 1.1 Stub

Pilot VP Seashore M

A Parker 51 Black with Gold filled cap, NOS, and the matching Ballpoint (which has no use to me).

I foresee 2025 as a year that my collection will decrease significantly.

Apparently I went a little overboard this year....

Four vintage Esterbrooks:

          blue mackerel J with a mismatched (black) cap, 3968 Broad "Sunburst nib";

black Dollar (?) pen, 3668 Firm Medium "Sunburst nib"; red mackerel J,

          9556 nib; blue mackerel J, 9550 EF Posting/Bookkeeping nib.

Heiko (apparently an East German brand), black, M? nib.

Inkograph "Ink-D-Cator", black, EF(?) nib.

Two Lamy al-Stars:

Aquatic SE, M nib; "Harry Potter 'Ravenclaw'", M nib.

Osmiroid (unknown model lever filler), "Italic B Straight" nib.

Three Parker Vectors: "Electra", F nib; and two blue ones, both with M nibs.

Parker 61, F? nib.

Parker 45 Dark Blue Midnight, (steel) F nib.

[Two] Parker 51 Vacumatics

India Black (rolled gold cap), F? nib and Cordovan Brown, both with F nibs.

Parker 75 sterling Ciselé FP & BP set (F nib on the FP but the tipping is bad)

Peter Pauper Press Jane Mosse Designs, F? nib.

Pilot Plumix, M clear with translucent purple cap (IM?) nib.

Sheaffer Star Wars Pop R2D2, M? nib.

Sheaffer Fashion I (?), black, M? nib [since lost].

Four Sheaffer Snorkels:

Statesman (I think) Aqua/Pastel Blue, F? nib; Snorkel desk pen set ("M2") with

burgundy pen and base; and two additional Snorkel Desk pens, both also burgundy

(unknown nubs on the desk pens).

Sheaffer Fineline (?) black, gold color cap (unknown nib).

Sheaffer school pen -- red, steel cap (unknown nib).

Sheaffer No Nonsense calligraphy pen -- red orange barrel, off white cap w/ floral

          design, Italic F.

"Shirley Temple" pen (apparently made by a Wearever sub-brand), light blue with black

          finials, F? nib.

Singwitz (unknown model), black, F(?) nib.

Waterman Ideal 52-1/2v ringtop grey brown-ish chased BHR (not sure of the nib width).

.

I began collecting Lamy Studio, unplanned and quite late in the year - adding Dark Brown, Rose and Glacier to the All Black and Black Forest already here. Will I continue? Unlikely since the disappointment of paying so much for a steel nib pen and there being no converter in the box sometimes  outweighed the pleasure of the new pen. Is it a case of some retailers generously adding one? Or others actually taking it out? It's so random I don't know.

Other than that I too gave away more pens than I bought.

Will work for pens...

I wanted to limit myself to 12 pens this year, one per month. I tried to sell 101 pens to reduce the hoard. I actually bought 23 pens and had one pen given to me, for a total of 24. I managed to sell 28 pens, so a net reduction of only 4 pens. A few of the pens I bought I wonder what was I thinking, I seem to still be under the thumb of fear of missing out -- I bought a Hanzi nib for a Lamy Safari, of which pen I didn't have so I had to buy one, only because I heard those nibs were discontinued and the stores were running out, as one example. I don't think I get much benefit from that nib, for the way I write.

I hereby commit myself before all of you that my net reduction of pens next year will be at least 50. Somehow, I will make this happen, not only next year but for the two years after that. Then we'll see.

@christof, those Safaris are pretty!

(I don't recall the year, but I got the re-release of the LE Savannah and Terra Cotta.  Love the colors but the nibs are the worst I ever had on a Safari, and I can't get them smooth.)

This year, two pens only, both piston fillers: a Moon Man make-believe Hemingway, and an Asvine.   Both handsome, but disappointing writers.  The Asvine writes better but can't be thoroughly cleaned.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

It seems I bought 14 pens in 2024.  I can't think how that could have happened.  (I gave 2 away and lost one so that's only a net increase of 11.)

Three very different pens:

33CleoMC110.thumb.jpg.64027cccf68e94198511396188a6a0b9.jpg

Waterman Gentleman 33 in black woodsy finish: love their design, the nib, not crazy about the plastic quality.

Cleo Skribent: nice elongated pen, smaller nib, this is the cartridge version. One of those pens that makes you want to write. If I didn't already have waaay too many pens, I would chase the white piston model, the 14k versions are way more expensive.

Pelikan MC110: the appeal is the calligraphy nibs, I have to confess what I really like is the dark brown colour.

Second excuse: each for less than $50.

Three more 2024 arrivals:

700Scholier3230.thumb.jpg.c9cc0cd0fafac40b79dbb7e2c6a94f94.jpg

Geha 700, M steel nib, Geha Scholier F 14k nib, Mabie Todd 3230 M nib. Can't resist the former, looked for a long time for the latter, was not disappointed.

Two unexpected beauties:

853776Century.thumb.jpg.39293c56852434918d6090379cfe55f5.jpg

The Parker 85 is very similar to the 75, but more rare and expensive; stumbled upon this one at an unexpectedly very nice price, and it happens to dry out much more slowly than the 75. Very enjoyable with Celadon Cat, the M writes more like an F.

I'd long given up on the 3776 Century as the finishes didn't seem very appealing and prices are double those of a few years ago; bid without expecting to win, and here it is; it's much better looking than I thought, the nib lays a nicely saturated line, not scratchy but too clingy for my taste, very different from Pilot in particular, so I relented and very slightly polished it; now easily up to par with most of my pens without losing its character. Well worth the normal asking price.

Wow, you've been busy, haven't you?  Nice score!  I've never seen a Pelikan desk pen before....

While trying not to buy any! The MC110 has its own cap, so not a desk pen, just very long.

Interesting.  I wasn't familiar with that model at all, and -- seeing the tapered barrel -- had just assumed it was a desk pen.

Bought all of it [still] last year, got them yesterday. My first ever sailor so it needed cartridges, too. And then I added sone platinum cartridges due to a promo 20% off. It's a budget pen but for me a lot.

I'd like to get my collection down to about 20 of my favorite pens, but I can't resist a good deal on a nice vintage pen.

Most of these needed only cleaning and a little work on the filling system!

Parker Striped Duofold - blue buttonfiller

Parker Shadow Wave Deb - silver

Sheaffer Balance Blue/Black

Gold Bond with Waterman's Purple nib

Parker Striped Duovac- Black

Sheaffer Clipper - 1st year snorkel - Black

Sheaffer Balance Jr - Ebonized Pearl

It was a fun year for me!

Trying to break the addiction:  goal was zero, zip, nada.

One vintage purchase reminded me that that pride goeth before the fall.

Trying again in 2025.
