Pilot Vanishing Point nib size comparison with Lamy 2000

Hi,

I'm interested in the Pilot Vanishing Point. But I'm not sure about which nib size to get. I do have a Lamy 2000 medium nib. I feel it's slightly too wide for me. Can anyone tell me how the Pilot VP medium nib compares with the Lamy 2000 medium nib?

Thanks.

They tend to run finer than the Lamy mediums do. It's almost a step finer. My Pilot M nib writes just slightly more broadly than my Lamy 2000 F for example. There are some variations to this, however because there is some variation to Lamy nibs. The Pilot nibs tend to be pretty consistent in width from nib to nib

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

For me the widest writing Pilot M nibs I have are on VP's. The Medium nibs put down a wet 0.60mm line. But the Fine nibs are more like other Pilot F's at 0.35mm. My Lamy 200 M nib is 0.55mm.

For what reason ever, there is a huge step between Pilot F (which is slightly finer than a Jowo EF) and a Pilot M (which is about the same as a Western M).

Perhaps it is that Pilot F, Western EF is used by Japanese for writing and (Western) M is already a kind of signature pen.

Montblanc in Japan once told that their MB149 is sold mostly in EF for writing and B for signing, followed by the other nib sizes.

In my experience,

fpnibs XXXF < Pilot EF = Sailor EF = fpnibs XXF < Pilot F = Sailor F = Platinum F = Hongdian EF < Jowo/Bock EF < Jowo/Bock F = Sailor MF < Sailor M < Western M = Pilot M = Platinum B < Pilot B.

Caution: (slight) variations occur.

I never had a Platinum EF, M. And I didn't see a difference between Platinum UEF and EF when I tested them at Itoya.

(My choice of nib sizes is red, blue is acceptable for me.)

Just scrolling through Aliexpress where they also sell original Pilot VPs. I found there a table with the different Pilot VP nibs:

EF(0.38mm), F(0.5mm), FM(0.6mm), M(0.7mm): I can't believe that, I think each one is 0.1-0.2 mm too large.

However, on https://yosekastationery.com/products/pilot-vanishing-point-ls-black you find a chart which I can believe:

EF(0.2mm), F(0.35mm), FM(0.5mm), M(0.6mm), B(0.75mm), S(0.7mm)

Well that's because there is the FM size in between :D I think Japan only, and/or only a few stores. So while we apparently see one step only, there are two.

That said, I find there is quite a big difference between the EF and the F, in these capless/vanishing point nibs.

I have to admit that I have never seen a Pilot FM - apart from the big Pilot/Namiki pens. But that explains it.

Anyway, I am leaning more to Sailor where I had such nibs - still too broad for me.

For me my other Pilot gold nibs 74,91,92 M nibs are all 0.50mm, FM in 91 and 912 0.40mm. But my three 18k VP's with M are 0.60mm which is the same as my 823 B. With Pilot steel nibs M is 0.40mm.
