Parker 35 Guirlande Silver plated - nib repair

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is having great holidays.

I am french speaking person so I hope my english will be up to the task of explaining the whole story.

We were cleaning the house at my family-in-law's and I found a fountain pen in a box with tens of your everyday plastic pens (bic and no-brand). Among the fountain pens, I found one which caught my eyes. After a couple of hours of research, I identified it for a Parker 35 Silver plated with guirlande patterns.

My father in law seems to remember that this pen belonged to his mother and offered it to me. I like pens (I own a Namiki myself) and this Parker 35 looks great and feels great in my hand, I'd be glad to use it.

The problem is the nib which is labeled "Parker 750" at the front and "3" at the back. I tried with a new ink cartrigde and it is scratching the paper so hard, it's impossible to write.

  • Do you know if this kind of nib is easily straightened / repaired ?
  • Is it possible to replace the nib ? I think of it as a last resort...
  • Do you know if this pen can be used with a converter ? It was stored with a parker long ink cartridge but I would prefer a converter if compatible.
  • Has anyone some tips to clean / polish the silver plating without damaging it ?

Thanks for reading and happy holidays !

Easy to check and fix, all you need is a 10x loupe or at least a magnifying glass and your fingernails:

@Boutlamine That's a really lovely looking pen.  Not familiar with the model but it's really a beauty because of the barrel and cap material.  And it's nice to have something that's basically a family heirloom (my late mother-in-law gave me pen that had been HER father's -- a Sheaffer Balance Oversize -- but which, at the time, had the cap of HER old Eversharp Skyline jammed on to it so hard I had to take it to a pen show and find someone with section pliers to get the cap off).  That one I'd really like to keep in the family (maybe leave it to one of my husband's great nephews or nieces when the kid is older).

I don't know how to answer your question about the nib, but I'm running into a similar situation with the Ciselé Parker 75 set I purchased recently at an estate sale (the tipping seems to have broken off on one of the tines).  I'm hoping to get it looked at next spring by one of the repair/nib people at the Baltimore/Washington pen show.  I paid so little for the set -- FP and BP, in the box with a converter included and two spare cartridges of Super Quink (I may be able to reconstitute the ink in the two spares) -- that I got (jokingly) accused of having committed highway robbery B).  So I'm hoping that I can AFFORD to get it repaired and still make the pen affordable (I literally paid about 10% for the SET that I'd paid a few years before for a similar pen (but restored and with a B nib, while the new one has an F nib).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

The Parker 35 can easily be back into service. OCArt has already mentioned a solution for the nib, your pen can use any Parker converter and a polishing silver cloth can help restoring the original finish.

Thank you so much ! I'll give a try after the holidays.

@inkstainedruth: feeling the same here. It might not be worth that much in terms of money but I'm so moved my father in law gave it to me. I told him it's the best present I'll have under the Xmas tree !

@jchch1950 : thanks to you mate, I'll order a converter and make it shine as new.

Merry christmas to you all !
