New nibs day

Many of us, even EF lovers like me, miss the variety of specialty grinds available today when it comes to Chinese pens. More and more Broad nibs are available, and the various ‘long knife’ nibs fill that void to an extent, but I’m sure everyone has their ‘wants’ list (M and B for the Jinhao 10 & Majohn A1; stubs for the popular pens, etc.).

The photos show my latest specialty grinds from the slightly famous Bobby of Chinese Pens (Etsy & AliX). I have excellent nibs ground by a variety of people from the well-known to pen friends, and Bobby’s grinds are equal to the best. Smooth with maximum line variation. And most of his hand-ground nibs are $25 or less, shipped. He really should be more famous.

I don’t mean to promote Bobby so much as to let people know there are economical specialty nibs available, although for a somewhatnarrow range of pens. Bobby has done #6 nibs in Architect Point (he calls it an Architect Nib and I think it is an AP, not a long knife, it handles like a sports car!) and stubs, #8s as stubs. He does specialty nibs for 51-style nibs, as well as the Lamy Safari. I have those but haven’t mounted them yet.

I guess I got excited about how nicely these write and felt the need to evangelize about a really great asset for anyone who wants something different for their nib.

Bobby makes stacked nibs, too. Itching to try them.

Reasonable price, too. I’m not sure I get the appeal of stacked nibs, but I’m not good at changing the angle of my pen while writing so I don’t benefit from those types of nibs. But I’m sure Bobby’s version is good—we had an exchange when I showed him a writing sample and he was concerned the downstroke on his nib wasn’t as fine as he thought it should be. He cares about the results!

I had a look at his Etsy store but, to be honest, found it difficult to see what nibs could be used with what pens!

It’s a little confusing, especially since Chinese nibs we call #6 sized aren’t exactly so there’s too much variability.

If you are looking to fit a specific pen, I might be able to say whether he has something compatible, or one of the more knowledgeable people here may be able to.
