"A" imprinted on Sheaffer Student Special section

I was going to polish away some plier marks on a Sheaffer Student Special section, when I noticed an "A" imprinted on the section.

Has anyone seen this imprint, or know its significance?

This pen is made of Dupont Radite as evidenced by the "D" at the bottom of the barrel.

Never seen a section marked such.  I think it was carefully carved.

I'd never seen anything like that either, but carving the "A" on the section does seem like a very strange thing to do.

That's especially so because the "A" has a serif on top. Seems much more likely that it was stamped.
