Loose Leaf paper and refillable journal?

Hello All,

Its been a while since I've actually used my fountain pens. I always had issues with buying a notebook, starting to write in it, then not wanting to use it for anything else because it already had a different subject or whatever you want to call it. I recently did some searches on here and cant really find what im looking for. I always liked the idea of the Travelers notebook, but I'm just not into its sizing. The tall narrow pages dont do it for me at all.

Ideally i want something that i can buy loose leaf refills, so i can easially move pages around to different notebooks if necessary etc. using something like Kokuyo A4 paper from amazon. If there some methodology to make this work? I feel like the paper like Tomoe river is probably too thing to use a 3 hole punch on without it just tearing too easially

I punch holes in Tomoe River all the time. My engagement calendar for next year is a Filofax undated weekly planner insert by Good Inkpressions. If you’re worried about holes breaking, you could try hole reinforcing stickers on one or both sides.

Top 5 of 26 (in no particular order) currently inked pens:

Pelikan M300 CIF, Pelikan Edelstein Golden Beryl

MontBlanc 144R F, Diamine Bah Humbug

Pelikan M605 F, Pelikan Edelstein Moonstone

Waterman Caréne Black Sea, Teranishi Lady Emerald

Pilot 742 FA, Namiki Purple cartridge

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

I use a home made leather travelers notebook thing. It's half letter size because I have a pile of HP 32# premium laser paper that I've been working through for years. I sew my own inserts together using letter sized cardstock and waxed dental floss since I'm not worried about it looking pretty like you might for a Coptic stitch. Only about 15-20 sheets per insert before it starts to get a little weird feeling due to how thick the paper is.

Bravo @bassmannate !!  If you have the time, I'd love to see a picture of your creation.

Check out the Kokuyo binders on JetPens. They have pre-punched paper and some punches, too.

I've used both the 20-ring and 2x2-ring Kokuyo binders and like them quite a bit.  I like the 2x2 style because I only have to punch 4 holes to add a page... and they accept 20-hole loose leaf refills as well.

And, with binders, you can always add tabs, pockets, and such.

Currently most used pen: Parker 51 <F> -- filled with Pilot Blue Black ink

Absolutely. I'll get some photos tomorrow. I can't even remember where I bought the leather from. It's about 2mm thick and probably a little stiffer than most like but I've worked some mink oil into the spine so it flexes a bit better.

I recommend Maruman loose leaf paper in the format B5:

L1201 (lined 6mm), L1200 (lined 7mm), L1207 (5mm squares), L1206 (solid color)

A "H" behind the number means it is a pack of 100, no "H" means it is a pack of 50.

Maruman also makes paper in A4 and A5.

Some papers exist in lavender and lightgreen.

I really recommend the Japanese-style ringbinders: https://www.jetpens.com/blog/Unique-Japanese-Binders/pt/242

A5 with 20 holes

B5 with 26 holes

A4 with 30 holes

On Aliexpress, you can find the basic spirals - in case that you want to make your own ringbinders: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005850489609.html

Regarding the punch for these papers - to make corresponding holes in your own paper - JetPens has some Carl punches. They can be used with a maximum of 4 sheets, better use them with 3 sheets only, 5 is nearly impossible. Kokuyo has more performant punches but they are very expensive. Example on Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/PN-50N/dp/B0012R6TDW/

Theoretically, the punches from PLUS (the owner of Sailor) should also work - but better confirm the distance of the holes the machine makes and the distance of the paper. https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/PU-030-30-676-Punch-Loose-Binder/dp/B00118S7ZA/

If you regularly order stuff in Japan, the best place for Maruman paper is certainly yodobashi.com.

Here's what I've had on hand for about 10 years. There was a period of about 5 years that I didn't use it at all because working on cars makes it a bit difficult to carry a notebook around with you. Now, I'm back in an office environment and have been using it again lately. The covers are made of cardstock. I think I've made some from file folders in the past. Just something that has a bit more stiffness than the paper and keeps it protected.

If I could change anything about it, I would would have cut the leather just a LITTLE bit larger to fully cover the edges of my inserts. I guess I could cut the inserts a little narrower to make them fit. The ceramic charm came from an Etsy shop, I believe. Not entirely sure where I got the leather or the elastic but they're common enough.

Thanks, @bassmannate, this is so nice.  And even nicer that it's something you made yourself.

Perhaps have a look at the ATOMA disc binding system. I find it highly versatile.

A picture I've posted before.

I quite like Filofax Refiilable Notebooks. They come in different sizes like A5 and A6, and use a spiral ring binding mechanism that ensures completely flat pages when the notebook is opened. I got me the accompanying punch, so I can use whatever paper I fancy.
I have previously done a review of it, see here

Avery, in the U.S makes A5 binders and a couple of different plastic tabs.

They are 3 holes binders, which I prefer, there are a number of punches from tabletop to portable (small one hole punch) that work to punch any pages,

Any A4 paper folded in 2 makes nice double pages.

I use both copy paper and Rhodia.

Most versatile and cheapest system I found.

I enjoy using with 24 pound letter-sized paper for notes and binders (the standard in stores is 20, office copier standards).

There will be a small selection of lined 24 at most office supply stores.

The higher you go the more expensive and enjoyable, until you hit that pound level where the ink won't dry...
