Sheaffer Technical Question

So, allow me to admit that while I have several Sheaffer pens that I love, I know very little about their proprietary filling systems.

I need some advice. I have what looks to be Legacy 2 or possible a late model PFM, with the snorkel and pump filling system - same as all of my PFM.

In a stupid move, in trying to reattach the blind cap on the pen with super glue, I have glued the filler pump closed.

Two questions. Would it make any difference to run the whole barrel through the ultrasonic cleaner in an attempt to break it free? And if not that, can I remove the silver filler that remain and substitute it for another filler without totally ruining the nib and feed?

Sorry for the long questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Several quick observations/questions:

  • If it has a snorkel and looks like a PFM, then it’s a PFM.
  • CA has virtually no place in pen repair.
  • Can you post pics?

I don't think the ultra sonic cleaner is going to break down super glue. It's not the kind of glue you'd EVER want to use on a writing instrument.

If it's a Legacy 2, you should still be able to use it with a squeeze converter, though using the touchdown filling system is not longer going to be possible.

On Amazon, search for "super glue solvent." You will find some "super glue debonders" that apparently work. Test before you use on your pen--it may be harmful to some plastics.

Acetone is the most common agent to break down/remove cyanoacrylates.  Acetone could also dissolve (read, likely would on a Sheaffer) your pen.  Warmth an moisture might work.  But if it is a TD Legacy, you can use a squeeze converter.  The only difference between the squeeze converters and the gold cased one, is the case.  A Sheaffer engineer told me that they made the gold cases to "encourage" the user to use the TD filling system.

I have been traveling for work, so I haven’t been able to post pictures, but I got the answers I needed. If I can convert to a squeeze filler without destroying the nib or feed, I’m good with that. I had the best of intentions in using the glue, but I learned my lesson here. Ruined the pen body, but lesson learned!
