If they had yellow ends instead of black (the end opposite from where you insert it in the section), then yeah, probably the same thing.

Yes indeed, but the sheen looked more golden to the naked eye.

My only other bottled black ink is Sailor Kiwa Guro, which has a nice graphite-y sheen, rather than the shiny black gleam that one can get from some dye-based inks.

Hope you enjoy the Onyx.  I have no bottles of black ink.  I don't intend to ever have bottles of black ink. My samples are far, far more than enough.    Black kitty, I love; black ink, not so much.

Right on! Yup, it's actually spelled "Brillant", with only one "i", although it does of course mean brilliant. Rotring didn't misspell it; that's the way they spell it here in Germany. Good substantiation: Pelikan has done that for years. Looking carefully at what's on their 4001-ink boxes and bottle labels reveals e.g. Brillant-Schwarz (black), Brillant-Rot (red), Brillant-Grün (green). Those hyphens are actually unnecessary, but the funny thing is that Pelikan did misspell their English equivalent of "Brillant" on their boxes and bottle labels in that they print e.g. under Brillant-Schwarz Brillant black! BTW the ink you so nicely reviewed here is/was named "Rotring Brillant" without any "Black (or "Schwarz"). Rotring just named it "Rotring Brillant" and it is in fact a black ink which was last issued in the 1990s. I renamed the title of your thread here.

Thank you, Alec!  I've updated where I could and added comments where I couldn't update, just so folks know the correct name.   I'll bet (almost) no one noticed Pelikan's error - we see what we expect to see, and most of us read words by shape rather than characters...   It appears Pelikan have fixed their error (in most places?), but here's an image from Amazon, just for fun:

I added the "(Black)" because my web searches found other boxes labeled "Brillant", but with other colors, and I wanted the folks who see the review to know I was reviewing the black ink.   And thank you for the naming confirmation - it can be hard figuring this stuff out when all you have is one lonely old ink cartridge.

  No water tests for Klaw - he hates water (except to drink it).  Smoke might volunteer, though.

You're most welcome! (The black cat is Klaw, though.  Smoke, referred to earlier in the thread but not photographed, is my grey tabby - almost 1 year younger, and a trouble-maker. )

  As visuals are so much easier to remember, here are my boys chillin' on the recliner.  Smoke is named Smoke because his colors and the wispy tabby marks remind me of smoke.   Klaw is the older (by ~9 months) and more cautious and polite.  Smoke is only 10 months old (~9 in this photo), thus a teenager and a bit of a problem child...
