Jacques Herbin 1670 - Turquoise de Perse

A pure turquoise with gold shimmer, the 8th in the 1670 series.

Ink is very wet, slightly below average lubrication (like most turquoises), long dry times on Rhodia, feeble water resistant.

Color can both be reminiscent of turquoise gems or domes of mosques in Persia aka, Iran.

I would’ve preferred it with a silver shimmer, I cannot see turquoise with gold, but then I don’t like shimmer, so it’s immaterial. :)

A note on the word, Perse (French for Persia) vs. Iran.

Persia is derived from the word Pārsa, Pars, Fars (name of a province in modern Iran), the Iranian tribe from which, Cyrus the Great, established the first Persian empire, in 550 BC. Note how the P evolved to F. The language spoken by Persians/Iranians is Persian aka Farsi. :)

Iran (pronounced Ēran), is derived from the Aryan, aka the  lands of the Aryans (Iranian tribes), which refers to the tribes of Central Asia, who colonized India and the Iranian Plateau, some 2500 years ago, give or take.

It is my understanding when one uses the word Persia, one refers to the ancient empire, much like the Roman Empire.

Back to the ink, this is a pure turquoise, I don't see any green in it, despite what the scan wants you to believe. Check the photo of Iroful paper to get a good idea of the colour range.

Art Work:

Surprisingly when added in copious amounts, there seems to be a hint of green. Note about the size of the papers. The first one is close to an A4 whilst the 2nd drawing is pocket size :)

Part of Inktober challenge 2024. I lumped the 5 last prompts into one drawing, on a Bristol Paper. The prompt are in bold.

Jumbo the elephant, took to the road with the skilled Navigator, Mr. Cat and mouse who played the Violin in search of one of most iconic Landmarks, the Eiffel tower.

I used the following fountain pen inks on Bristol Paper

Jacques Herbin - Turquoise de Perse (applied generously)

Noodler's Apache Sunset/ Lexington Gray (Elephant/ mouse), Polar Brown (the road)

Diamine Celadon Cat (landscape)

Sailor Kiwa Guro (Mr. Cat)

Barock Umbra (Eiffel Tower)

Another fine review, and more superb artwork

If I had seen only the photo, I would have guessed the colour of this ink to be 'light aquamarine', rather than 'Turquoise' 🤷‍♂️

But of course 'turquoise' is the name given to stones that are found in a wide range of colours across the blue-green part of the spectrum; it's not as though there's an ISO standard for the colour of 'turquoise', eh? 😉

Colour is surprising. If I base it on memory I would say, it reminds me of turquoise. But experience has showed me that a memory is more often than not an emotion and not reality :)

Yes. I believe turquoise is a mixture of blue & yellow, as a colour, as a stone it varies from green-blue- to the one full blue one with black veins. The beauty of stones is that they are each unique and thus cannot be captured in a bottle of ink :)

Thanks for the brief geographic and linguistic history lesson. :)

Midori gives it a little green... ;)  It's got good shading and the shimmer makes it look a little more interesting.  Otherwise, meh - I'm over-turquoised...

Interesting collection of quotes. :) Ah, fun set of swatch cards: Samurai kitty, beach kitty, demon kitty having a bad hair day ;) , Persian kitty with fancy necklace, angel kitty... :D  Poor water test kitty looks a little distressed.

Love the drawings!  Great review, @yazeh!

Lady Tatiana having a cup of tea!

Perse mouse, seconds after barely escaping the water test, relaxes and doing other things while we fountain pen nerds try hard to find out if this Turquoise is different from all the others. OK, if mouse feels not involved, we have to judge by our own and I would vote for: no difference - the glitter doesn't count!

Thank you, @yazeh, for this ink review, for doing the Persian vanishing trick with water-test-mouse, for sharing your charming Inktober work, for the quotes and for finding time to having a cup of tea! ;) :)

Always a pleasure finding a new ink review from you!

Keeping the suspense, delaying the answer as long as possible ( @LizEF & @yazeh ):

Eeenesss develops empathy with professional actress cat. Cat doesn't turn a corner of her mouth and continues to smile, even when the water brushes against her. After all, she knows that Mouse was only whisked away and not in any serious danger. 👍

One life!

  We can pretend that Persian desert kitty was shocked and then later happy at such an abundance of water. ;)

The mouse was defiantly washed away and is now doing another water test :D

The cat is a  method actor. And likes to do water stunts :D

Or I can put a disclaimer, No cats/mice were hurt/ harmed or water down during this ink review. However, they did their best to be naughty, scratch and on the same time be cuddly :D

Of course now I'm thinking back to the movie that Dustin Hoffman and Lawrence Olivier did together, Marathon Man, and Hoffman (a method actor) explaining that since his character was a runner he was running every morning, and Olivier's response was along the lines of "Very interesting.  But my dear boy -- why don't you just try ACTING?"

As for this ink?  It's a bit too green leaning for my taste, and I'm becoming increasingly un-enamored of shimmer inks in general.  But thanks as usual for the comprehensive review, including the fun artwork.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I remember that! Method actors take things seriously. I remember reading Brando once got into a fight, during Street Car, and came back with a bloodied nose or something ;)

Thanks! Just to clarify I don't see any green despite what the scan wants you to believe :)

So you're saying I'm gonna have to look at a swab in person, then....  Thanks for the heads up.

Well as you've just redone the driveway, I recommend not to loom at any swatches 😄

Oh, we're still waiting for the driveway people to START.  Looks like it's going to be next week, but we haven't heard for certain (they apparently got delayed on previous jobs...).

Well, the good thing is that the money transferred from the LoC account into checking will have been collecting interest in the meantime....  Of course, the bad thing is that we'll have to park on the street all week when they DO start -- including dealing with alternate side street parking on at least one of those days (not that a lot of people bother to park legally around here to begin with) and most of the other side of the street is no parking (I kept waiting for the person parked within 15 feet of the fire hydrant down at the corner to get ticketed -- the local cops don't ticket people who park facing the wrong way (although I'm betting that will change if and when there's a bad accident) but DO ticket if someone is blocking a driveway or the hydrant....
