Ink the Color of the Sea

Poetman

Recommended Posts

I am looking for two inks that will remind me of the sea each time I use them. I know the ocean comes in many colors, so I am interested in 2 different shades: first, an ink that looks like

the middle of the Atlantic, not dark, like midnight, but a rich, deep blue. Second, I want an ink that evokes Caribbean waters, with undertones of green, turquoise, and teal. I am attaching some inspirational links. I would love others' feedback and suggestions.

1)

I like the colors when used with the brush, but less so with the pen.

I like how this color is distinct from the color of the sky

I would look at the selection of blues and greens from Robert Oster.  Their range is remarkable, with subtle differences between shades/ hues.  Their inks can be a bit on the dry side, but being able to view the range side by side is helpful.  Marine and Tranquility particularly remind me of tropical waters. You may have to check for colors at a number of vendors as few carry them all.  I don’t know if the company site even shows them all.

As I'm sure you know, there are many inks that have been based on this theme.

For dark blues that look like the middle of the Atlantic, I suggest that you read some reviews of:
J Herbin 'Bleu des Profondeurs';

Pilot Iroshizuku 'Shin Kai';

Diamine 'Sargasso Sea';

perhaps even Pure Pens 'Saltire' (a dark blue that has only blue components in my experience, no purples or greens).

For the 'Caribbean' colour, I suggest a look at:
Waterman 'Inspired Blue' (it used to be sold as 'South Seas Blue');

Pure Pens 'Celtic Sea';

Pelikan 4001 Turquoise;
Lamy Turquoise;
Pilot Iroshizuku 'Kon Peki';
Pelikan Edelstein 'Topaz' (might not have enough green in it for you);

Diamine 'Aqua Lagoon' (might be too green).

And IMO you should definitely have a read-through of this thread:

Also, if I were you I would have a look around at the swabs of the umpteen inks within the various categories of fountain pen ink on:
https://www.diamineinks.co.uk/

They are inexpensive, and they are made in more colours than you could shake a stick at.

Also, if you see any ink that piques your interest, go over to InkSwatch.com, select 'Compare to a Specific Ink', then use the 'Brand Selector' & 'Ink Selector' pull-downs to specify that ink.

It will return swabs of inks whose colours it thinks are similar to the ink that you first specified.
E.g. if you were to specify 'Diamine Havasu Turquoise', you would get the following suggested comparisons:

Just to throw out a perhaps lesser known brand:  Mar Caribe by Monarca (literally “Caribbean Sea”).

   I’ve really been into Herbin Bleu Calanque and Bleu Pervenche lately, as well as Monteverde Ocean Noir, which might be hard to find outside of the US, but Diamine Oxford Blue and Kobe #14 come close. Diamine Sargasso Sea and Blue Velvet are also beautiful, as is Leonardo Hawaii Turchese (that might be backwards, but it’s those words).

Top 5 of 19 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144 IB, Herbin Orange Indien/ Wearingeul Frost

Sailor x Daimaru Central Rockhopper Penguin PGS mini, Sailor Wonder Blue

Parker 88 Place Vendôme IB, Diamine Golden Sands

Salz Peter Pan 18k gold filled filligree fine flex, Waterman Serenity Blue

Pilot Silvern Dragon IB, Iroshizuku Kiri-Same

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

middle of the Atlantic,

When I crossed it in a troop ship in '66, it was gray-green-greenish the whole way. (real hard playing ping pong, with the far corner dropping away from a good shot.) If and when the sun came, it left quick.

Flying over it at various altitudes, 14,000 and up...I've seen it a blue or two. And a few grey greens too.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.
