Confusion on Wahl nibs

Hey everyone,

I might be acquiring a gold-filled Wahl Ring-top fountain pen and I see that they usually come with Wahl nibs of varying sizes.

My query was if that the imprint on the nib only says Wahl 3 and not Wahl 3 14kt, what does it mean? Did Wahl vintage come with gold nibs regardless of whether it is mentioned or not? It does look like gold but I thought it will be best to clarify here on the forum.

Appreciate the help!

Thank you

Don't currently have any Wahl pens. The 3 denotes the size of the nib. I have seen some makers pens that were 14 k and not marked or the marking is so far down on the nib that it does not show. A magnet test may tell if it is gold or gold plated.

In the 20s many manufacturers did not list the gold content on a nib.    Any of the Parker, Waterman, Wahl and Sheaffer gold nibs from that era that I've tested have tested 14K or higher.  I would expect it to be 14K.

Yes I understand the nib size as I missed out on a great Wahl 4 silver filled ring top pen. Thank you very much :) I am actually not very concerned if it is gold or not but was just curious I guess ;)

Hey Ron,

Thanks so much for this input. Yeah was just wondering. Are you into restoring vintage?

<Are you into restoring vintage?>

Oh, Abhishek, Ron Zorn is one of the very best restorers around, I assure you; but he's likely too modest to answer your question...

Ha ha Thanks @Christopher Godfrey I will have more info when I get those pens now.

So in the time I've been a bit silent, I've acquired three wahl ring-top pens - gold filled, silver filled and one black with gold trims.

Also acquired is one Sheaffers snorkel and my favourite - Blackbird by Mabie Todd & Co. recently. The Snorkel and the Blackbird are both restored. Sadly can't say that about the Wahls.

Also, three of those Wahls are with my uncle in the USA and the other two are with a friend in the UK. I have to wait patiently for them to get to me.

Oh yes, I had also bought a restored Parker Duofold Quality (DQ) hard chased rubber fountain pen from Peyton Streen Pens that I am currently using and it has a delightful lucky curve fine nib.

I'll put in more detailed descriptions and my experience a little later.

Regards
