Diamine Celadon Cat

Diamine Celadon Cat

Disclaimer: My initial review of this ink was as harsh as Jacques Herbin, Les toits de Paris as both are quite similar and that I don't particularly appreciate washed out inks. But with time it grew on me, especially for drawing. So read this review with a pinch of salt and make up your own mind.

A dryish green grey by Diamine designed by r/fountainpens on Reddit.

I wanted to review this after Jacques Herbin Les toits de Paris. These two inks are very similar, the former leaning green, the latter, blue. Both need soft smooth nibs and are paper dependant. I would say, Celadon Cat is slightly more lubricated.

Personally, I hated the writing experience with Lamy (and I’m restraining myself) in the beginning. It was ok with Pilot Elite, thanks to its gold nib, but the ink was too pale, so I had to press it. In the vintage Waterman W2 flex nib the writing was agreeable.

However overtime, the more the ink languished in the pen, the better it became and the lack of lubrication less pronounced. So give it time :)

I think this ink would be suitable on absorbent paper and maybe Iroful. It has some halo effect on Midori, which was nice.

Chroma:

 Very nice!

Writing Samples:

If the scan look blue, it's not. It's definitely green. Check comparison colour with Jacques Herbin Les toits de Paris on the Iroful scan.

Art Work: Samurai celadon

Inspired by Japanese Celadon pottery and samurai statue and obviously the ink itself ;)

Ink was applied generously by directly dipping the water brush in the sample vial.

·       What some might not like: Not lubricated, pale colour.

·      Ghosting: Yes, on cheap paper, but you might get away with it with a M nib.

·      Flow Rate: Watery

·      Lubrication: Yuck.

·      Nib Dry-out: Did not notice.

·      Start-up:  Ok

·      Saturation:  Pastel

·      Shading Potential: Yes, but who cares. :D

·      Sheen: Some halo effect with B nib on Midori

·      Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Did not notice.

·      Nib Creep / “Crud”: Did not notice.

·      Staining (pen): No.

·      Clogging: Did not notice.

·      Cleaning: Very easy :)

·      Water resistance: Ok.

Yazeh, the ink whisperer strikes again! ;) Beware inks that grow on you - they either have mold or they end up becoming your favorite! :D

Clearly this is an ink to use in that pen that doesn't seal well.  We all have at least one of those.

I've never been even slightly interested in this ink, but the chroma is actually rather intriguing to me.  Quite a lot going on in there.

The color on Rhodia is telling me to relax.  The text on Rhodia is telling me to go make an offering to my kitties... :D

I do not like the color on Midori, nor even TR68gsm.  Iroful is OK, but I like the color on Rhodia better.  No copy paper for me! ;)  Love the tall kitty-god on the swatch, but the color on the swatch is back to me not really liking the color... :(

Ooof.  Poor water-test kitty - that water did a number on his/her fur!

I really like your Samurai! (Especially with mousey on the shoulder. :D )  This suggests I'd like the color a lot more if it were more concentrated...  Perhaps one day I'll have to sample this ink.  <pulls up list, adds ink> OK, in about 2.5 years, I'll sample this ink - assuming we both still exist and I still have money...

Thanks, @yazeh for another fantastic review!

Well it was between trashing the ink or giving it a chance ;)

Haha! I'm not sure if the Pilot is well sealed. It should be. Maybe we should leave the bottle/ sample to you during  heat wave :D

Chroma is surprisingly nice. I would like the colour on a wall, or maybe a tablecloth and pottery (of course) maybe but as an ink. not so much ;)

I might have sent you a written sample. But it's best for people who like/ appreciate pale high shading inks :)

Here is the "supposed" halo effect on Midori only with the B nib. The lighting is artificial a mixture of Halogen/ yellow spotlights :D large.20241014_132604.jpg.e3403f37370ef06c78564ba3de745cb1.jpg

It's sort of nice concentrated. But there's no reason to force oneself to like a colour one does't like. If/ when I get around it, I have a very nice murky brown ;)

Thank you.  I see it now.  I do like the halo effect, but not enough to dismiss the actual ink color. :D

:) It's OK, I'm to the point where sampling ink is interesting regardless of the color.

If / when you get a round tuit, I shall enjoy said murky brown! :D

I like the contradiction/ paradox of ink neediness, in the above sentence. :D

You've seen it in my recent Inktober sketches. Though sometimes, I mix and match so many inks, I don't know where I'm heading :)

Well!

That's an interesting chroma, plus, I have Blue Nose Bear. Which I always liked. And Gris de, etc.    In fact I like all your comparison colors.  Still waiting for Toits to arrive.

Poor waterlogged kitteh.  Is that a Blue nose Cat?  Samurai Cat looks much more comfortable, in control, and one to whom we should make offerings.

(And yes, all the Kitteh-related quotes are true.)

@yazeh, thanks for this and all other reviews.  What's next?

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

It was inspired after a Celadon ceramic cat :)

If a cat manages to become samurai, then kudos to that. Ours is too indiscipline for her own good to become one. But she's good at pretending that we should make her offerings of all sorts :D

Exactly! The best paper for this ink is a paper tissue used to clean your pen from this mistake. This is one of the most disappointing inks in my collection.

It's really frustrating when one buys a bottle on a whim, and the ink isn't really good.  Thanks to samples, it rarely happen anymore :)

I love this ink in terms of colour and find legibility to be fine.....but.....it has some curious characteristics in flow and how it settles and dries on the page which makes it very pen and paper dependent. More absorbent papers make it feel very, very dry in terms of flow and lubrication.  Some pens, of differing nib sizes, just don't seem to play well with it. I cant figure out why. It seems fine in the three Pelikans I've tried it in.

Funny, normally absorbent papers (in my experience) help with subpar flow and lubrication. But as you said it depends on pen/ nib and paper :)

Pelikans I believe are wet pens, so that solves he problem :)

Oh 🥺, I missed your review post. @yazeh, I'm so sorry!

My best, and only, excuse is: this ink is so pale, I didn't see it in the sunlight! 😎

Cat almost vanished in the water test but is strong as Samurai! こんにちは

Is there maybe a Cat incident among ink makers? I bought Colorverse Cat nebula which has similar hue and is as pale, if not colourless. 🤷‍♀️

However, I enjoyed your quotes, the drawings and the writing samples!

Looking forward to your next review. :)

I have a completely untested theory (perhaps I could get a government grant to do research ;) ): Introverts prefer cats over dogs (what with dogs liking to go outside and socialize with everyone, whereas cats can be content indoors and often run hide from everyone, just like their owners).  Introverts are more likely to be writers, because their heads are full of thoughts clamoring1 to come out, but they can't possibly tell those thoughts to a person (because they're introverts), so they write them instead.  Ergo, more cat fountain pen people, ergo more cat inks - because cats sell. :D

1The way the "a" in that word is pronounced requires two "m"s. One "m" suggests it should be pronounced like "Claymore", but it's not.  That there is only one "m" is wrong, just wrong.
