Question for owners of the Pilot 85th Anniversary Hiten fountain pen

To the owners of a Pilot 85th Anniversary Hiten fountain pen, I was wondering how you all care for the pen.

The below excerpt from Pilot's site notes that togi-dashi taka maki-e technique is applied on a sterling silver base.
「スターリングシルバー台に、星の煌く夜空を青貝と金で表しながら、天人の舞い降りる優美な世界を繊細な研出高蒔絵で表現しています。」

As sterling silver tends to tarnish over time, does the layers of Urushi painted over the sterling silver body protect it from tarnish, or have you all had to use silver polishing cloth to a certain degree? Has any of you observed any tarnish of the silver over the time it was/is in your possession?

Thanks :)

I have the pen, but no tarnish is observed so for. The bare silver part may be platinum coated.

Thank you for the response! I got my hands on an unopened one recently so I was wondering if tarnishing would be an issue. It is an amazing pen!

Hi all, as I’ve inquired with a Pilot repair tech regarding the Hiten at their Tokyo HQ when another one of my Pilots fixed while traveling in Japan, I thought I’d provide an update.

The tech said that the sterling silver on the Hiten will tarnish as he has seen a few. He recommends gently wiping with a polish cloth if it tarnishes especially for the cap ring. However excessive wiping can wear away the urushi. He also said the edges of the flat cap top and bottom of the barrel/body will be more likely to show wear after prolonged use.

IMO I’m just gonna live with the tarnish if it ever happens.
