Do you know that there are businesses (at least two, I think), that send you stories this way?  You subscribe and they mail you letters that tell the story.  It looks like there's a little more to it - like one is a mystery and they send you things that are supposed to be clues (photos and ticket stubs and such).  Of course, they're all mass produced, so it wouldn't be a hand-written letter, but it still seems like a cool idea.

I somehow missed this on the first go around (coming down with a virus, starting to get loopy). I have seen those- mystery boxes I think I’ve heard them called. They sound interesting. The handwritten letters about your stalwarts sound like a cool Patreon tier to help support your youtube channel.

Top 5 of 26 (in no particular order) currently inked pens:

Pelikan M300 CIF, Pelikan Edelstein Golden Beryl

MontBlanc 144R F, Diamine Bah Humbug

Sheaffer 3-25 EF ringtop, Skrip Black

Waterman Caréne Black Sea, Teranishi Lady Emerald

Pilot 742 FA, Namiki Purple cartridge

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

It really does. Now I really want some of those creamed syrup candies that were ubiquitous in Vermont when I lived there.

I've seen those, too, but these are different, I think.  Here are two examples (seems there are a lot of these out there, they just don't all advertise well): Storyville Letters and The Flower Letters.

:) I ponder things like this, though I have to wonder about the "return on investment" - it could take quite a while to write such a letter...  I have thought of doing additional scenes, Q&A, and other such stuff, though.  Just not sure I want to deal with self-employment taxes.  Anywho, thanks for the ideas and encouragement!

There is enough confidence in the community, @LizEF, not only to make this thread grow three pages long "over night", but to make you buy a red Carène with F nib before you run out of cartridges! ;) :) :D.

Thank you for this red review, for the story part (including the amendments [btw. thanks to all the inspiring contributions from the other FPN members! 👍]) and for the effort to drink all the ink from old cartridges!  Always a pleasure! Meanwhile I love arriving at my office on Wednesday mornings! 👍 :)

Duel of the magic wands? 🤔 Oh, good times coming! :D

I think I told already elsewhere 🤫 about my love for red inks - for the "right" red inks. This looks amazing from the photos, including the magnified one.

There are two other well behaved red inks with similar hue, I adore a lot: Waterman Red and Pelikan Edelstein Garnet, both written with a red Carène with F nib .... 😇 🤭

One life!

:) You're most welcome!  (The cartridge I "drank" from last night almost got tossed instead - it's an unobtainium ink, so I don't know why I'm bothering, except I'm overly "completion-oriented".  I try to be very careful, but that cartridge was determined to make a mess.  For better or worse, enough ink survived - barely - so we're going forward.)

I really like this one, especially in the CM nib and after diluting.  Were it not such a pain to deal with diluting cartridges, I might be tempted...

Guilty as charged. I hope Santa Klaw brings you a lovely F Caréne this holiday season.

Took me a minute to figure that one out.  Here's a link for others.  It's a red ink named "Wax Seal", in celebration of Diamine's 160th anniversary.  Looks like a nice, bright red.

Interesting, but I'd have to see a written example, not just a swab.  And it looks pretty close to Diamine Classic Red, except maybe with some blue sheening to it (?) -- so I can probably pass on it until I can see a side by side comparison with Classic Red.

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Feel better!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

That’s a really good price! I hope someday you sumgai one in a color you like.  In the meantime, Pen Heaven has a fine for $155.

Isn't that their price for just the grip-section (including the inlaid nib & the feed)?

Every listing that I've seen on there for a complete Carène (i.e. cap, barrel, & grip-section) is priced at £230 😔

:lticaptd:Shame on you! I think if I ever get another pen, it will be a Waterman Carene.  I don't know why, but I seem mildly obsessed with it, even though I don't especially like the shape.  I suppose it's because I have no inlaid nib pens, and of the ones in current production that I've seen, it's the one I like the best.  If only they would make the body with interesting colors. :(

Whelp1, they hauled off and made an interesting color for 2024.  Then Atlas Stationers hauled off and had a 20% off Black Friday sale!  And just because I was feeling reckless, I ordered a bottle of Lennon Tool Bar Sesame Oil because it looks not entirely unlike the Gutenberg Urkundentinte G10 I reviewed.  (Hopefully they arrive safely and I like both! :yikes:)

1For non-native speakers of American English, this is not me talking about a dog having puppies, it's how "well" sounds sometimes when one is trying to use a certain tone that basically means one is resigned to one's fate, or recognizing something unavoidable.  (Merriam-Webster spell it "welp", but as often as not, it's pronounced "whelp" - and yes, those two sound slightly different, just as wale and whale can (though they often don't, depending on the speaker).)

@LizEF congrats, whelpy :D 🐶 🌭 :thumbup:

I couldn't discern the colour on my screen. The photo looked black, but I'm guessing it's a kind of blue. Hope it's what you're looking for and you'll enjoy the nib, the pen and the ink. :)

When I read sesame oil I was thinking is she planning to have a stir fry with the Carene. It's not very Français, pardon my French. Until I relaxed and saw it's just an ink :lticaptd:

Yeah, it's a dark blue, and can be hard to see the color - I put it on my big monitor and looked at lots of images.  We'll see reality when it arrives...

:lticaptd:Yes, sesame-colored ink!  In theory.  We'll see on that one, too...

Oh, Liz- that’s a beautiful pen, very understated and luxe. Santa Klaw definitely has you on the nice list! I hope you love it!

Arg!  Le pen is here!  What ink do I use?  Do I stick with a Waterman?  I have:

  • Audacious Red
  • Inspired Blue
  • Harmonious Green
  • Intense Black
  • Serenity Blue
  • Mysterious Blue
  • Absolute Brown

Or do I go with the brand new ink I've never tried anywhere - Sesame Oil - and risk it not working well (and voiding my warranty ).

Or do I go with one of the other 350 inks I have.... :yikes:

Le pen is soaking now - apparently it was tested or something - there was dried Serenity Blue in the section. (Doesn't appear to have been used, so I assume tested.)

Go with an ink you know well and use frequently.  You know the drill, avoid any shimmer, sheen, pigment, IG and avoid any pink/ red/ purple dyes.

@LizEF congrats! I'm feeling as happy as if I had got my own grail pen :):happyberet: I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback. I hope you rewarded with an exquisite nib and unforgettable writing experience. Thank you for sharing
