Apparently there will be a Lamy 2000 in green.

Just sad it’s Lamy because they are known for offering a quality product at a fair price. …‹snip›… Nothing wrong just disappointing for a value based company.

It still offers a quality product at a fair price, for the very products that gained it that reputation.

It isn't so very new that LAMY also offered pens such as the cp1 Platinum, and multiple variants of the Imporium, that budget-minded consumers/customers may find “unaffordable”, “elitist”, or otherwise alienating.

Nothing wrong with feeling disappointed; but perhaps what is “wrong”, as in not properly aligned with reality, is one's expectations that end up not being met.

i would prefer LAMY — and other businesses, too, including but not limited to Noodler's Ink, Goulet Pens, Robert Oster, Kaweco, and Majohn/Moonman — to make its business decisions without fostering or pandering to any illusion that the consumer has any say in that. Self-styled fans of a brand don't “own” the brand in any way, and how they want the brand or the entities that own/run the business have no standing.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I don’t disagree with any of these points. Just sad it’s Lamy because they are known for offering a quality product at a fair price.  It would be like Toyota selling a limited edition car for twice the price based on color.  Nothing wrong just disappointing for a value based company.

Wouldn't that be a Lexus?

Ok, I'm out ;)

I feel that the value of this pen to me isn't actually so much the pen, but the book. I enjoyed reading the book that came in the box and read it cover to cover before even looking for the pen. The book isn't exactly worth $300, but I think the money you are paying is for the experience. Whether that experience is worth it to you or not is up to you to decide. In my mind, when I think about the Pine 2000 package, I see the pen as more of a "side show." The experience of opening the package, and maybe the book and experience of owning something uncommon is possibly one place where the value is for people.

You can decide whether there's anything in the hefty, heavy package that is worth it to you, otherwise, that's just more pens, books, and a big box and tissue paper for someone else to enjoy.

As a side note, I saw some Lamy models in the book that I do own but are no longer made anymore, and I felt that the book tied my collection together

Stolen: Aurora Optima Demonstrator Red ends Medium nib. Serial number 1216 and Aurora 98 Cartridge/Converter Black bark finish (Archivi Storici) with gold cap. Reward if found. Please contact me if you have seen these pens.

Please send vial orders and other messages to fpninkvials funny-round-mark-thing gmail strange-mark-thing com. My shop is open once again if you need help with your pen.

The exact same book (with a different colour cover, otherwise the content is identical) came with the previous brown L.E. This makes collecting the pine L.E. much harder to jusify getting both I.M.O. I can find uses for two notebooks, but two copies of the book??!

I also find both the size and the weight of the packaging ludicrous.

Donn you mentioned yours coming with a free bottle of ink. Did the bottle have its own compartment in the box?

No, the ink (including the expected ink box) was not within the main box containing the pen, the books, etc.  The ink was a separate item that was shipped with the main box in a larger shipping box.

The bottle of ink is probably a special from the retailer. I know that a few retailers were offering a free bottle of ink (I can't remember off the top of my head now). I got mine stateside, but I didn't get any ink with it.

I think that's the other thing, it's almost diminishing returns getting the different colors of this pen because the "extras" have, in a way, a less value now that you already have one of the book. As a side note, one of my theories as to why the LE Lamy 2000s in colors have come in F and EF nibs is that there may be a lot of buyers in Asian countries, and those are the most common nibs they sell on the 2000 in those regions.

That makes sense.  That’s why I’m glad I already had a wider nib on each of my two black 2000s, so I could switch nibs.

Just putting it out there, the book is available separately from the special edition 2000s. The book originally didn't have any ties to Lamy aside from talking about Gerd Mueller working with Lamy. I bought it a couple years ago for a school project and it was a really interesting read for me since I love that era of German industrial design.

In case anyone wants to get spooked, the price for the pine set in Mexico direct from Lamy is "only"... $839 USD.

Which explains the number of burning hoops and crocodiles any consumer here is wiling to jump through to not pay those prices.

Apparently not.

If a product sells out immediately/quickly at a given price it is by definition not overpriced?  It would be easier to argue that it is underpriced.

  • 2 weeks later...

Saw it today at a pen store in Vancouver. The green was far less vibrant than I had appreciated.  Was an instant pass for me upon seeing it - independent of price.
