Jacques Herbin – Moulin Rouge (Couleurs de Paris)

This is the 2nd ink, of the new Jacques Herbin collections, Couleurs de Paris (Colors of Paris), sold in J Herbin 10 ml or 30 ml bottles.

The first ink of the series I reviewed is Rue de la Verrerie.

Moulin Rouge is the famous French cabaret, birthplace of can-can etc.  :D 💃

I cannot describe the colour; it hovers between red/ orange and a touch of pink. I believe the Herbin inkmeisters have managed to capture the Moulin Rouge mystique :)

It changes depending pen, paper & nib. Shading is paper dependant, but best with M/B nibs, extreme on Iroful paper, subtle on Rhodia and Midori.

Ink is not as wet as Rue de la Verrerie and lubrication is slightly below average.

It ghosts and there is some bleed through on copy paper.

Long dry times on Rhodia, makes it unsuitable for lefty over-writers and water resistance is ok, but it won't survive a swim :D

Art Work:

My artwork serves to show case the inks, I tired to include as many as the new Herbin inks:)

Paper is a Talens mixed media paper.

Here is a tiny  homage to the Moulin Rouge Cabaret:

Jacques Herbin Moulin Rouge / rue de la Verrerie (Royal blue), Les toits to Paris (grey blue)

Noodler's Lexington Gray, and Sailor Kiwa-guro

Jacques Herbin rue de la Verrerie (Blue) Métropolitain (Green), Moulin Rouge and Tour Eiffel (golden Brown). And Sailor Kiwa-guro for the outlines :)

OMG!, that Moulin Mouse drawing!   :lticaptd:

Thank you, @yazeh, for gifting such a funny, nevertheless informative, ink review to us! 👍

I like how the colour appears on Rhodia and on Hammermill paper - as always, I do not only enjoy the ink lines but also the quotes! :)

I may not buy this red Paris ink, although it has some style because of its background.

Btw., I would buy the Moulin Mouse drawing! ;)  Would you allow me to print the image and put it on the wall in my office, right beside Professor Eeeness?

And, sure, I'm excited about the water test where no (drawn) animal was hurt!

One life!

Of course you can print it. The drawing is very small, 12x12 cm :) If you want I can sent it to you (free of course ) , it would be an honour :)

Doesn't it look basically the same as their Rouge Caroubier?

No, not really. When I look at them side by side, they are different. I tried to take photos, but the camera doesn't capture the difference.

Rouge Caroubier is more scarlet, brighter, in your face. Moulin Rouge is darker.

What they share in common is long dry times, and low lubrication, but they are definitely different :)

If I were to choose one between the two, I would go for Moulin Rouge, it has more nuance, if it makes any sense.  But thankfully, I have enough reds ;)

Thank you for the side-by-side! It looks a little bit different here, that I can see. Anyway for me it's not really a very inspiring red...

A nice bright red.  I think I might prefer the darker red from your photograph - which would have saved me from finally running "Moulin" through google translate after a lifetime... :D   How fun that the cat in the hat posed for your swatch card! ;)  Paris must have been a bit of a wreck after the two of you stopped in for a visit. :P

Hmm.  The water test is intriguing - is that a kitten mill :yikes: and "canned" mouse?  :lticaptd:  Love the artwork, as always.  Red kitty mill looks rather sinister.  Poor blue kitty looks a little frightened...  What is he observing off to his left?  The sinister kitty mill eating poor mousey?  Hmm....

Enjoyable as always, @yazeh!  Thank you for continuing the series for us. :)

This JH ink series seems interesting, glad you are getting to them.  The chroma's a little mysterious, oui?

Another ink not for moi, though I love your artwork and quotes.  Kitteh in the hat, lol.  @yazeh, thanks so much, and please keep it up!   I am eager to see the rest of the series.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

It's Ok. But when you've used as many inks as we have, it's sort of ok :)

Sorry, I forgot to add a translation :) It's a difficult colour to photograph. Here is a better photo, maybe it helps you and @lgsoltek appreciate the difference between the two inks :) I had to fold my Tomoe River 68 gsm to show the contrast ;)

Yes. It was supposed to be a mouse doing the can-can. Very good  :lticaptd: My water test sketches are on the spot. It's the first draft, good or bad :D

@yazeh Thanks as usual for the comprehensive review.

I'd have to see this one in person, I think.  I get futzy about red inks -- I want them to be RED (think Diamine Classic Red).  Not pink, not brown, not orange, not violet leaning and not burgundy.

Then I doubt this is for you. Ink is very paper dependant :)

Love the review - well done! The artwork is inspiring, and the Moulin Rouge photo was a nice touch.

This red looks tempting... it seems to be just that touch different from other reds, dancing between red & orange ... a true can-can ink 😉
