I don't think I can narrow it down to three....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Probably Parker Washable Blue (my most used pens in school were Parkers), then Sheaffer Peacock, then Cross/Pelikan Royal Blue and Blue Black, and MontBlanc Mystery Black. Now I try to make up for it by trying different inks and rotating heavily.

Top 5 of 25 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144 IB, Herbin Orange Indien/ Wearingeul Frost

Waterman’s 52V red ripple ring top, Herbin Vert de Gris

Parker 88 Place Vendôme IB, Diamine Golden Sands

Parker “51” Desk pen EF, Sailor Manyo Konagi

Yiren Giraffe IEF, Pilot Yama-Guri/sky blue holographic mica

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

  • Platinum Carbon Black — most often, typically for lesser aggregate length of ink lines (e.g. number of words) put down per occasion
  • Sailor Seiboku — less often than PCB, but greater aggregate length of ink lines put down per occasion on average
  • can't really say what the distant third is specifically — for some (short or extended) periods I might favour brown, for others khaki or olive, for yet others turquoise, … or blue-black

I always have a blue-black as my top ink, that's how I am.  Currently I'm in love with Rohrer & Klingner Salix.  I write pages everyday with a blue-black ink.  I  have a black ink ready to go for sketches, diagrams and marginalia, and right now that's Platinum Carbon Black.  Third place.... Diamine Salamander!

Currently most used pen: Lamy 2000, Makrolon <F> -- filled with Lamy Pink Cliff ink

I don't know.... I go through phases.

My most used/liked ink is Herbin Lie de Thee, a light brown shading ink. MB Toffee, PE Smoky Quartz.

Green Green inks, like the discontinued 4001 Brilliant Green. I just loaded a pen with an old half dried in the bottle in an OB semi-flex nib....had it shaded that extreme, I'd had 4-5 bottles in reserve.

However the lively green-green R&K Verdura beat Irish Green by a nose, and 4001 Brilliant Green by a neck....

.......that type of lively green is a well hated ink....many folks complained for years that Pelikan didn't make a dark sherwood/pinewood dull non shading ink. (Why they didn't buy that from Diamine is beyond me.)  Pelikan listened to this com....and finally did make a dull, dark green ink, but discontinued the other lively green. I was lucky I was able to give that bottle of dull, non-shading saturated dark green ink away......other wise I'd emptied it down the bathroom sink....the bottle is well worth saving.

There are many turquoises that are nice.

There are days when I could ponder which blue ink to use....but seldom do.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

Pelikan 4001 blue black, Waterman Audacious Red, and I'm not sure about the third one. I don't think there's any I use as much as those two. Possibly Diamine Autumn Oak.

De Atramentis Sherlock Holmes (night blue)

Diamine Soft Mint

as for a third, uh, harder to say. But I’d like to just say a turquoise ink.

This is a recent snapshot of my ink use. Another year a garnet ink would have led the list.

All pigmented inks.

Can you tell me something about pigmented inks, and this ink.

I ordered four Octopus inks a few months ago, but don't know about pigmented inks. Two for sheen, that are paper (better on Asian than Euro paper) determined and tilt to see, and two for shading, which they did.

1: R&K Alt-Goldgrun (One of the top three inks of all time, and certainly the shadiest)

2: Diamine Writer's Blood (Lush , rich and ensmoothens the driest of nibs . dried blood on opera house seats)

3: Pure Pens Windermere (The perfect teal-ish blue black. The entire line deserves more recognition)
