A question about Jim Gaston's old website

In 1999 I got into fountain pens. At the time the internet was relatively new but Jim Gaston had a website with some excellent information about fountain pens. Sadly Jim passed away in 2015.

I was thinking about his website today and thought I would throw a question out to people who used to visit the site back then. Did the site that he had play some really peaceful music while you browsed the site? Or was this another fountain pen website I'm thinking of from that era? And if the answer is yes, does anyone know what the piece of music was? If I recall correctly it was some kind of acoustic guitar piece.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Hi,
I don’t know whether or not I ever saw the website that you mentioned, but from your description of the music I am prepared to hazard a guess that it might have been this:

This beautiful piece of music was used as the main theme for a film whose most-memorable scenes are very far indeed from the restful calm of this music!
(That said, the haunting elegiac tranquility of Cavatina is eminently suitable as the theme for a film that tells its tragic story so elegantly.)

Does it sound like it could have been the music you remember?

Slàinte,
M.

Thanks for posting. I don't think that's it, but it's really close if it's not. And maybe it is the right piece, but I think I would have immediately thought--"THAT'S IT!"--if it was. That said, I really enjoy that piece and will give it a listen when I want to chill out.

Hi again Danny,

I heard the following piece on the radio the other day, and thought immediately of this thread.

Tàrrega's Recuerdos de la Alhambra has the same kind of peaceful atmosphere that Myers' Cavatina does, so I wondered if it might be the piece that you recall from Jim Gaston's website...

Anyway, I hope that you enjoy it, even if it's just another 'close, but no cigar'.

Slàinte,

M.

I would recommend having a listen to The Essential Julian Bream.  Odds are good that you will find the one you are looking for in this 53 piece collection.

Classical guitar is a small library compared to other genres so you should be successful.

Have you tied using the "Wayback Machine" to see if you can locate the original website?

I always have trouble with the Wayback Machine, so if you use it and find the music, please post a link and I’ll try and find the name and composer of the piece. My husband is a classical guitarist (I dance Spanish folkloric) and I can usually recognize most of the “hits.”
