Polishing products and their compatibility with pen materials

Hi Everyone

Being new in the world of fountain pens and restoration of them, I am not sure how to approach polishing. I know some are in favor of polishing others are not. If you decided to polish what products are best for which material?

·        Harden rubber

·        Casein

·        Bakelite

·        Celluloid

·        Thermoplastics

·        Metal parts

·

Assuming that you always start with a less critical area to see how things turn out in the specific case. What products do you recommend for the different materials? I am not looking for long detailed answers. More something simple and short like below.

·        Harden rubber: XXX, YYY and ZZZ

·        Casein: XXX and never ZZZ

·        Bakelite: BBB and YYY

·        Celluloid: No idea

·        Thermoplastics: XXX

·        Metal parts: AAA

Let me know if a post about this already exists.

I am looking forward to read your answers. Thanks.

A soft cloth, no chemicals is all I have ever used. Never seen the need.

But, I don't have say for example any pens that are made from materials such as Sterling Silver which would tarnish if you didn't do something.

Nova is a three stage polishing system; they use to clean jet fighter canopies; ...they wouldn't ship to Germany over a decade ago, so I don't know how it works. I've heard only likes about it...one don't have to go to the third polish, the first tow seem to do just fine.

Semi-Chrome for years here, was the go thing until Nova got it's ass in gear.

Semi-chrome was finger polish, and then felt cloth buff.

I've no fears of using it today. One does cover with a thin strip of masking tape the lettering.

I'm sure any light chrome polish will do.

For re polishing green turned black rubber...I've read about but never done. Expensive for only one pen.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.
