Although I had already done so privately I would like to give a very warm and public thank you to @mana for his help in connecting me to the Pelikan hubmaster in Puerto Rico. Now I know there are more FP users on the island that I previously thought.

You are most welcome, really happy that it worked out! :)

Our Pelikan Hub was really nice, even though I had little time to prep it. Wonderful bunch of people, that lot. ❤️

Our Hub was fun.  Got to meet a couple of new people this year, and had some other folks come out of the woodwork.  Like last year, it was held in a classroom at the University of Pittsburgh, which had a lounge next to it with some kitchen space, and we did it as a potluck).

There was a raffle of various swag donated by a local stationery store (sadly I did not win the grand prize, but I did win a bottle of J Herbin 1798 Kyanite du Népal) and there was also stuff as part of the local club's "Free to whoever wants it" for the taking, including some leftover small notepads from last year's Hub).
Of course I'm going to be eating potato salad for the next two weeks....  My husband can't have it because some of the ingredients contain paprika.  (He came along to the Hub to help haul stuff and to help with coordinating the food setup, even though he technically wasn't eligible for any of the swag....)

Our Hub was back in Crown Center by The Pen Place. We met the new owners, and that was encouraging for the long term success of the store staying open. They have remodeling plans the mall is paying for.

There was a mix of pen club people and new people. I’m hoping the new ones decide to join pen club.

I hope next year, people who miss signing up still go. The only thing you’ll miss out on it the swag.

The Hub in Heidelberg is in Thomas/Kaweco on the com's, Fountain Pen museum, unfortunately, I learned about the hub being in Heidelberg some 2-3 months too late.

So, please sign up for the newsletter before the end of 2024, so that you'll be notified directly by email (even if you don't tune in to FPN, reddit, and various other social media platforms) next year when the registrations open — without any promise at that point there will be sufficient interest to have a Hub near you, or any information about who the Hubmaster will be and at which venue he/she will decide on hosting the event — so that you (and your friends who may be interested) can attend, by putting your hand(s) up three or so months in advance.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Missed the one in Dallas, it was during show hours and couldn't get away from my table to go.

LOL.  I just looked at the HUB website after seeing on FB that the Austin event is being held in October.  Guess this is so uncontrollable, even given the 100 rules, cities do exactly what they want when they want and just use the Pelikan name.   edit---and so perhaps it should be, as it appears Pelikan does nothing more than send 25 goody bags to each "master" along with a powerpoint.

Hmmmn, to be fair, Austin changed their date, along with Dallas and Houston, because that date clashed with the Dallas Pen Show. Plus a bunch of other places in the US had to do that because of Helene. And yes, Pelikan has absolutely no control over that.

While the intent is to have the Hub on that particular date, rescheduling for reasons such as the above is nothing to sneer at. Life happens.

Also, I wouldn't drag on the Hub Masters if you haven't tried arranging one yourself. Having arranged four I know there can be a fair amount of work and prep involved, and I am on the lighter end of such things with relatively easy access to free facilities and a limited number of participants.

Also, what a weird dig at Pelikan, it takes quite a bit of work on their end too and the bottles, pads, etc. do cost a bit also. While all of that can be chalked to marketing, it is still fairly expensive per person reached.

For what it's worth, I know that in 2022 the (eventual) Hubmaster was “enlisted” late in the game, probably because he was a store (in the heart of the city) manager for a national chain that is a highly visible authorised retailers of Pelikan products here in Australia. This year, Pelikan approached a bunch of people (including me, surprisingly) after the second round of registrations, because nobody volunteered to be the local Hubmaster. In the end, our Hubmaster (with all due gratitude, and I'll honestly say it went very well, thanks to his organisation) was the store manager of another related business. So I have nothing but gratitude and respect for those who put their hands up to play host for their local events, no matter how smoothly or less-than-smoothly the events played out; I couldn't have done as much, and more importantly, wouldn't have volunteered or agreed to do as much.

Those who think that Pelikan and/or volunteer Hubmasters are there to offer service and flexibility, and make sure everyone who wants to attend (and/or identifies as a member of the fountain pen hobby “community”) can do so and have a good time, free of charge and gets to take home some material gifts courtesy of Pelikan, really need a reality check.

Not what you think. Those HUBs are all over the world. Ours was held for a short time. We had a power outage because of the weather. It will be continued in October. So you never know what really happened if you have not been there. It also is not easy, to plan a HUB...

Also, Pelikan is sending out thousands of bottles of ink worldwide together with other things. Do you have any idea, how much work that is? I think Pelikan is doing a lot each year to start this event.

Thanks for the points of view.

I think my major takeaway remains Pelikan has a website "owning" this event with a lot of "rules" which are altogether unenforceable.

IMO they take credit for providing some "frameworK'" for what are really locally ran eevnts. Ingenious marketing for sure.  And being new I have no viewpoint on Pelikan's product whatsoever having neevr even as much as used one.  It could just as easily be a Sailor or whomever event and I'd take away the same view given the same framework/rules.

I do see the value of a name brand lending its name and promotional items to events.  100% credit should go to get together leaders.

Never mind.

I missed the Pelikan Hub because I had a terrible cold and didn't want to be a propagator to the participants of the Hub. I'm sure it was fun and a place to learn about pens.

Is there a link somewhere for a mailing list? I'm either going daft or it's not on the website! I have belatedly followed their Instagram.

There will no doubt another round of Hubs next year.  Whether there's going to be one convenient to you, though, I can't say.

I'm lucky in that there has always been one in Pittsburgh since the first year of them.  But I know that last year some people came down all the way from from Erie (about a 3 hour drive each way) to attend our Hub.

Ours have varied in location over the years, depending on what is available.  The first one was in the corner of a local for a restaurant chain -- the Hubmaster that year wasn't even able to get the restaurant's banquet/meeting room, because that was already booked for a monthly gamers' group get together.

@inkstainedruth fortunately I'm pretty close to a major railway station, so I can get to Birmingham, Manchester or even London with reasonable ease! I doubt there'd be enough interest here in rural Cheshire to have one!

It wasn't on the 2024 pages 🫢

I don't think Pelikan has updated "the 2024 pages", or the website at all, since June. Not a single photo of carnage from any of the September gatherings to be seen there as yet.
