Piston and vac filling mechanisms

Hi all

Been making pens for some time, starting down the usual kit route then progressing to the kitless/Bespoke/Custom pen making, but now feel I need to go the extra mile and start investigating adding a filling mechanism so would like to add either a piston filler, like used by Montblanc or Pelican or a Vac filler like Sheaffer used to use.

Anyone like to share their techniques for making such a system or provide links to any commercially available setup that can be incorporated into my pens.

Thanks in advance for any help or input into this.

Paul

It might not be exactly what you are looking for, but you could buy the vacumatic-style pump filler used in the Wingsung 601. There is a variant that uses a piston instead of a rubber diaphragm as well, for reliability and quicker filling. You will need to add a breather tube to your feeds, but that shouldn't be an issue, maybe using teflon tube.

They are around $4 on Aliexpress, when sold as spare parts.

Thanks for the link, that does look an interesting option.

Not sure about adding a breather tube, how does it actually work, how would I know were in the feed I need to drill the hole ?

OK, found som info on modifying the feed to add a breather tube, seem to be doable, I have ordered a couple of the pumps, will report back, when or if I get one built. ;)

For a breather tube, I found that Vintagepens has some thin teflon tube that can be used. Should be more durable as well compared to what wingsung uses (ABS?).

I don't really know about the geometry for the breather tube in the feed though, so I can't really help there, other than recommending trying it on cheap parts first. The complete pen is only $16, so you could buy one to study.

Good luck, always cool to see people experiment with interesting filler mechanisms instead of cartridges.
