Rohrer & Klingner Helianthus

 

Thanks @Lithium466 for the sample. 

This is a happy orangish yellow or vice verse, legible, wet, low lubrication and fun to use. Not suitable for copy paper, unless you use UEF, or EF nibs. 

Cleaning was easy. 

 

I prefer this J Herbin Bouton d’or. 

 

Colour is difficult to scan. The photo is closest to the real deal

The writing and sketch was done with a glass nib, hence the thicker lines.

Other inks used:

Noodler's Lexington Gray, a mystery purple and blue black ink.
The light blue is Faber-Castell Aquarelle pencil

Paper is Fabriano Sketchbook (super absorbent)

 

 

 

This one was inspired by the ink itself, Helianthus is sunflower. It's entitled Shyness

Paper is Talens pocket sketchbook. 

Other inks used:

Noodler's Lexington Gray/ Eel Red Rattler's Red 

Kakimori Kurun

The centre of sunflower is a mixture of Helianthus and Lexington Gray

 

·      Pens used: Kaweco (Reverse EF/Ef F/M/B, BB), Conway Stewart 330, Oblique flex (very wet)

·      What I liked: Gorgeous legible orange yellow.

·      What I did not like: Not waterproof

·       What some might not like: Not suitable for wet pens. 

·      Shading: Some

·      Ghosting: Yes, on cheap paper. 

·      Bleed through: A bit on on cheap paper.

·      Flow Rate: Wet

·      Lubrication: On the dry side. 

·      Nib Dry-out: Did not notice. 

·      Start-up:  Ok

·      Saturation:  Pastel

·      Shading Potential: It’s difficult to see shading with this colour. 

·      Sheen: No. 

·      Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Did not notice. 

·      Nib Creep / “Crud”: Did not notice.

·      Staining (pen): No. 

·      Clogging: Did not notice.

·      Cleaning: Easy

·      Water resistance: Dismal

·      Availability: 50 ml bottles.

Nice! But as you imply, it's likely not a great ink colour for "ordinary" writing purposes. Yet all the more for artwork like yours. If anybody asks me for good examples of such art, I'm gonna fill 'em in with your name.

Thanks for another great review, @yazeh!  Fun quotes.  Holy blinding swatch cards, Batman!!  That De Atramentis Artist Yellow is enough to burn a hole right through your skull! (And Bouton d'Or isn't far behind!)  Helianthus, on the other hand, is a relief after those two!   Love our little kitty and mouse enjoying a flower together.  Ah, and this time Mousey take the hit so our flower can get some water...   And now the art we've all been waiting for...

 

Really like the texture you managed to get in the grey parts. Love the mix and match outfits of our kitty and mouse. Poor kitty looks a bit worried.  Perhaps wondering, "Will Mousey's umbrella act like a lightning rod?"  And then the pre-drench sunflower.   So sweet - and still some texture in the grey - very nice.

Thanks. It's mostly due using a paper not meant for inkart, and waterbrush filled half gall with Lexington Gray and water 😊

Thank you. These experiments happen when I have too many pens inked up and I'm trying to gage the variations of each ink. For the darker purple part I dipped the water brush directly in the convertor, whereas for the pink bow tie, I apply the brush directly on the feed. It's quite a fun practice ☺️

Oh, wow!, how I love your artwork!  👏

I'm excited about your creative interpretations of Helianthus, about the volunteer sacrifice of mouse for the water test, about the altruistic support for cat before rain¹⁾ and about the flower which is gifted with true honour in the heart!  I get the impression, mouse had become aware about all the errors made in the past and is on the best way to become rehabilitated!

1) @LizEF: if the lightning hits, mouse will be the first victim - and cat will have some nanoseconds of reaction time  This looks like a true sacrifice ... 🤔

Yay for another great review @yazeh!  And what lovely artwork too!

(And to say I had initially erased the name on the vial, just to put it back in extremis before closing the box...it was mystery themed)
 

This one...was surprisingly ok to write a few highlights in my daily notes. I usually have a pen inked with some sort of orange or red for that purpose, and Helianthus did well in a wet fine Parker 45, I even liked it better than Kin-Mokusei! It's also perfect to mix with too dark reds to make them more eye seering. IMO the best "yellow" on the market, as long as you don't want water resistance...and are ok with some nib crusties.

I agree. I was happily surprised. I had seen it used often in Ink drawing and I was always intrigued by it. Thanks for sharing it with me 🙏🙏🙏

My eyes!  My eyes!  *stumbles around*. Those first two comparison inks…. Yow.

 

But the writing with Helianthus looks nice.  In fact it looks more orange. I love orange inks.  And of course your sketches.  How unusual for Mousie to be the wet one while Kitteh stays dry.  Shyness sketch is super-cute.
