Earlier today I was at a medium size flea market that I often go to on weekends

.

At one of the vendors, from whom I have purchased a few pens, I saw a Montblanc 144. At least the box that it was in said Montblanc 144 (B), and had the year 1995 on the label.

It looked to be a legitimate MB when I looked at it with my loupe. I was seriously considering making an offer when I noticed that the wide ring on the cap said "Masterpiece" NOT "Meisterstuk". BTW, the feed looked like ebonite(?) and had a single groove in the middle and fins on either side of the groove. It also said "Germany" on the ring. The nib actually looked more like a left oblique than abroad.

Did Montblanc ever use the English word "Masterpiece" on their pens? That's what threw me off and made me think it might not be real.

The dealer wanted $200.00 for it. It looked in reasonably good condition although the piston filling mechanism did not seem to work (didn't test it with water). Although it may be gone when I go back next weekend, I still would like to know more about the wording AND what it might be worth... just in case it's still available.

Also, and idea as to repair/restoration cost if the piston fill has to be fixed?

Thank you for any help.

A Piston fill 144 marked Masterpiece for $200 would be the find of the century.  It would likely be celluloid with the two stage piston.  144-small.jpg.fa6c2780cef222d692073a5a9d6ddda6.jpg

Thanks for the information. Now I have to pray that no one else bought (or buys it before next weekend.

Oh well,.if it's not there, it won't be the first time I missed a GOOD opportunity.

Wish me success...

Any idea as to potential cost of repairs for the piston?

Ballpark is acceptable...

It may be okay.  The two stage pistons feel quite different than the modern pens.

By the way, the translation of Meisterstuk is Materpiece and yes, it was used in some of the 50s 14x series pens.

If the piston needs repair I'd ask Ron Zorn who could best do the work these days.  It's been several decades since I had such work done.

Thank you for the clarifying comment. I will keep that in mind IF the pen is still available when I go back next weekend. BTW, I was aware of the translation of the word. It's simply that I had never seen or heard of the Montblanc having the English word "Masterpiece".

Not much I can do until the weekend anyway. If I get it and it needs the work (it's good to know that) Ron is a person to go to for MB repairs.

Keep us posted.  If you truly found a celluloid 144 in the wild it would definitely be exciting.  My 144 sized MBs from the period are among my favorites especially my broad flex nibbed 234½ seen on the left.

Will definitely keep "you" posted.

For various reasons, if I were to actually get it next weekend, there is a good chance that I would put it up for sale at the Commonwealth Pen Show in September. Of course I reserve the right to change my mind.

Okay, here's the mini-adventure around this pen...

As of last night at 10:30, rain was predicted early to mid morning.

Was up about 5:00 and no rain/wet ground in sight. On my way to the flea market (about 20 miles from me) it starts to mist lightly and occasional a few drops. By the time I get there it's raining lightly. It's an outdoor flea market and there are maybe 10-15 vendors set up and under tents (normally, it could be more than 100 spread over 3 fields). From a distance, where I park my car it looks like "the" vendor I am looking for is not there! BUMMER!

Guess I will walk about anyway.

Turns out he is there and has a tent over his area. I ask, "any pens?" He answers "No."

I think, it was a long shot anyway. Oh well!

Then he says, "except the one I had last week." ) Oh GOODIE!

So I check it out with my loupe and it seems to be the same pen.

I ask, "will you take $150.00?"

He says, "sure."

After paying him and as I am walking back to my car, the sky opens up and the rain pelts down on my umbrella.

Still, I get soaks and think to myself, this is CRAZY! And yes, I am happy that I made the effort and succeeded in getting the pen.

It turns out that it will need to be repaired AND the nib seems to have some flex to it!

I am looking forward to getting it repaired and using it. Who knows, I may even end up keeping it for myself!

Thanks for listening...

Jess a for fun.

I have sold or given away all my modern 14x fountain pens that included three 149, a couple 146, a 144 (gifted to a young girl who was stuck at home recovering from an accident as an incentive to fill time by illustrating stories she liked) and kept only my Dumas (correct sig). But I love all of my earlier 50s vintage 14x and 24x fountain pens.

Keep us posted.

@Gloucesterman Stories like yours are what keep me coming back to this forum.  Ordinarily I don’t prefer “Hollywood endings” in film, but when it comes to real life, I adore them.  This one is an award winner!  Thank you for brightening my Sunday, and I suspect everyone’s weekend here, with this heartwarming conclusion to your adventure.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, for those of you who might be interested in the :Rest of the Story", here goes...

First off, it turns out that the pen was actually a 142, not a 144 :-((

Secondly, the cost to repair the pen is/would be too much for me, so...

I will probably be using it as partial payment (for parts) with my repair person for other work that he has done for me.

Live, learn and enjoy the journey.

Thank you (all) for the advice, insights and opportunity to participate in the vintage MB lifestyle/fantasy.

Well, Sunday is another visit to the flea market and who knows what I might find this week.

(Last weeks find was a tortoise shell Moore #94-A that needs a sac and looks great all polished up.)

I'll have to see if I can find the email my repair person sent me. I may have deleted it already.

I am pretty sure he said something about the piston mechanism being broken... and I could be wrong.

If I find it, I will post it here. If I don't, I will post that as well.

It's not as if you were asking for my shoe or neck size -- you know, personal information! LOL!!

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). Every hobby needs a hobby, eh ...

    • JungleJim 1 Sept 1:55
Perhaps it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times to get that person to appear, though with @Sailor Kenshin you only have to say it twice?

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...
    • OldFatDog 26 July 19:41
I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
    • RegDiggins 23 July 12:40
Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
